Effect of Bovine Blood-Rumen Digesta Mixture on Growth Performance, Nutrient Retention and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chickens

Abstract: A feeding study was conducted to assess the value of abattoir wastes i.e. bovine blood and rumen digesta (Bovine blood-rumen digesta mixture (BBRDM)) on performance, nutrient retention, carcass yield and composition of broiler chickens. BBRDM was incorporated into broiler starter and finisher diets at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% levels in partial replacement of full fat soybean meal (FFSBM). Chemical analysis showed that BBRDM contains 46.1 crude protein (CP), 6.4 crude fibre (CF), 2.1 ether extract (EE), 23.4 ash and 22.0% nitrogen free extractives (NFE). Daily feed intake and daily weight gain decreased with increased BBRDM. Birds on diet containing 20% BBRDM were associated with the lowest and highest feed conversion and mortality, respectively. Dry matter and ether extract retention`s were significantly influenced (p<0.05) whereas the values for crude protein, ash and crude fibre were unaffected (p>0.05) by dietary treatments. Carcass yield and composition were unaffected by treatments, while liver and gizzard weights increased with increased BBRDM inclusion. Inclusion of 15 % level of BBRDM as replacement to FFSBM was found to be a safe level in broiler chickens` starter and finisher diets.
Proximate Composition and Phytochemical Screenings of Crotalaria retusa Leaves and Seeds  [PDF]

Abstract:
The leaves and seeds of Crotalaria retusa were evaluated for the proximate, mineral and anti-nutritional contents in a completely randomized design. Atomic absorption spectrometry was used in determination of the seeds and leaves for phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron. Anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) including tannin, oxalate and phytate were also determined using appropriate technique. The result of proximate analysis indicated that leaves and seeds had high crude protein (18.00% and 14.63%), dry matter (94.78% and 90.98%), Ash (7.00% and 8.02%), crude fiber for both leaves (12.75%) and seed (28.44%) and the ether extract was (4.60%) and (5.03%) for leaves and seeds respectively. Mineral analysis indicated the Crotalaria retusa leave and seeds contained some essential mineral such as %P (0.37%) leave and (0.47%) seeds, %K (0.97%, 0.68%), %Mg (0.48%, 0.64%), %Ca (0.58%, 0.78%) and Fe (76.10 mg/kg) for leaves and (70.10 mg/kg) seeds of Crotalaria retusa. The leaves and seeds of Crotalaria retusa had low concentration of anti-nutrient factors; phytate (0.01%) leave and (0.06%) seed, oxalate (0.07%) leave and (0.09%) seed, tannin contents were (0.02%) and (0.05%) for leaves and seeds respectively. The overall results suggested that Crotalaria retusa leaves and seeds were of high nutritionally quality due to high protein and mineral contents with low presence of anti-nutritional factors.
Proximate and Mineral Composition of Boiled Carnavalia ensiformis Seeds

Abstract: The study examines the proximate and mineral composition of Carnavalia ensiformis seeds subjected to varying periods of boiling in water. There were four treatments, which comprised: 1 hr, 2 hrs, 3 hrs and 4 hrs water boiling. Each treatment was made up of three replicates. After the expiration of each boiling period, the water was discarded, sun-dried for 7 days and thereafter milled to pass through 1 mm sieve and subjected to laboratory analysis. The study revealed the following: Dry matter did not differ significantly, P < 0.01, across treatments. Crude protein recorded for the 4 hrs boiling had a higher value of 21%. Highest crude fibre was recorded for the 2 hrs boiling. Ether extract decreased in value up to the 3 hrs treatment time but later increased in seeds boiled for 4 hrs. Ash content decreased from 4% in the raw seeds to 2% after boiling for 2 hrs but later increased to 4% in seeds subjected to 4 hrs boiling. Magnesium level increased to 20% in seeds boiled for 3 hrs but zinc level decreased from 0.73% in the raw seeds to 0.42% in seeds subjected to 4 hrs of boiling. Iron content recorded a decrease at 3 hrs of boiling but boiling for 4 hrs recorded an increase while copper content recorded an increase in seeds boiled for 3 hrs. The results revealed that subjecting seeds of Canavalia ensiformis to 4 hrs boiling in water led to a release more nutrients in improve form.
Proximate and Mineral Elements Composition of Water Soaked Carnavalia ensiformis Seeds

Abstract: The study examines the proximate and mineral elements constituents of water soaked Jack Bean (Carnavalia ensiformis) seeds. The seeds were subjected to four treatments which comprised: 24 hrs, 48 hrs, 72 hrs and 96 hrs soaking in cold water with each treatment made up of three replicates. After the expiration of each soaking period, the water was discarded, sun-dried for 7 days and thereafter milled to pass through 1 mm sieve and subjected to laboratory analysis. The study revealed the following: dry matter increased after 96 hrs of soaking. Crude protein (CP) however decreased in value from 21% to 17%. Soaking for 48 hrs led to a reduction in the crude fibre (CF) content of seeds. Prolonged soaking period of 96 hrs increased the ether extract (EE) level. However, total ash content was reduced in seeds soaked for 96 hrs soaking. Soaking for 96 hrs increased Mg, Fe and Cu contents but Zn content recorded a decrease. Differences between treatments for all the parameters considered in the study were significant (P < 0.01).

Abstract: Panicum maximum cv T58 was established on a three Nitrogen (0, 100 and 200 KgN ha-1) and spacing (50x50, 75x 75 and 100x100 cm) regimes in factorial arrangement using randomized complete block and split plot designs. The three nitrogen levels were the main treatments while the spacing was the sub treatments each replicated three times. Dry matter evaluation was done and nutrient quality analyzed after 8 weeks of planting. The harvested grass was fed to twenty-seven West African Dwarf Sheep in nine treatments with three replicates each. Feed intake, weight gain, feed digestibility, feed utilization and feed to gain ratio were parameters measured. From the results, animals on the 200 KgN ha-1/50x50 cm plot with a crude protein of 11.8% had the highest feed intake, weight gain and utilization values. The lowest were recorded for the 0KgN ha-1 treatment (5.2% CP). The 100 KgN ha-1/50x50 cm (10.8% CP) and 100 KgN ha-1/75x75 cm (8.6% CP) were not significantly different (p<0.05) in performance when compared to the 200 KgN ha-1/50x50 cm spacing (11..8% CP) and 200 KgN ha-1/75x75 cm spacing (9.6% CP), respectively. The phosphorus level followed the trend for the nitrogen level in all grass samples, which affected the acceptability level. Therefore, Panicum maximum cv T58 can be established on a 200 KgN ha-1/50x50 cm or 100 KgN ha-1/50x50 cm or on the 75x75 cm spacing and feed at 8 weeks for optimum animal production in the derived savanna zone.

Employee’s Market Orientation and Business Performance in Nigeria: Analysis of Small Business Enterprises in Lagos State

Abstract: Organization success is determined by the demand for its product or services. Many organization put in place methods and strategies that could enabled them attract customers and improved the quality and quantity of their product. One of the major methods in this direction is market orientation. Employees are influenced to consider organization interest and be involved or oriented to monitor their customers’ loyalty and attitude towards their product to enable them to be competitive, productive and profitable. But despite its advantage, most small business enterprises (SBEs) in Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria don’t engage in market orientation. This paper examines different methods of market orientation and how it could be employed for improved SBEs performance in Lagos State. Two null hypotheses were formulated to test the relationship between customer orientation and sales growth and market orientation and SBE’s profitability. Questions were formulated based on the hypotheses and questionnaires were distributed to top managers and investors of SBEs, out of which 95% of the respondents returned duly completed and properly filled questionnaires. The research findings show that many SBEs that engage in market orientation recorded substantial progress. But most other have not really applied this method, hence their low performance and profitability. The study recommends that market orientation should be used by SBEs for improved performance. Also, SBEs managers and owners should engage in market orientation to enable their enterprises more profitable and survive in changing, dynamic and turbulent business environment.
TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY IN LAGOS STATE OF NIGERIA.

Abstract: The state of technology in any organization has a significant influence on the quality and quantity of production of its goods or services. But despite this, technology is prone to constant change which organizations have to monitor, manage and cope with. Manufacturing industry that will like to be competitive and profitable should ensure that employees are trained and involved in the management of technological change for organizational survival. But most organization tends to undermine the contribution of employee in managing technological change, the outcome of which are low profitability and performance. This paper examines how employee relation could be employed for technological change management. It also seeks to determine effective method of using technological innovation for improved performance in the Nigerian manufacturing industry. Two hypotheses were formulated to determine the relationship between technological change and employee skill; and between technological change and employee performance. Question based on the hypotheses were formulated and 1256 questionnaires were distributed to selected 30 manufacturing industry in beverages, textile, steel, cement and chemical industry in Nigeria. Findings reveal that employee relations do not have significant relationship with technological change. The paper recommends that employee relation should be considered in the management technological change for profitability, competitiveness and survival of the Nigerian Manufacturing industry.
Removal of Embedded Artefacts in ECG Signals by Independent Component Analysi

Abstract: Routinely recorded Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are often corrupted by artefacts; these artefacts make the visual interpretation and analysis of the ECG signal difficult. This paper presents a model, dynamic in structure, sufficiently suitable for removing the ECG artefacts caused by embedded objects in the body using independent component analysis technique. By simulation, the model is able to detect and remove extraneous noises in the conductive paths and discern essential nodes of ECG that are useful to clinicians. Our study, also demonstrates that convolutive ICA can be regarded as a useful tool for accurately estimating the effects of embedded object in the patients on ECG signals
