Influence of Agro Ecology on Rice Varietal Resistance to Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Sitotroga cerealella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Benin  [PDF]

Abstract: The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and the Angoumois grain moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.), are serious pests of stored rice in Africa. This study aims to evaluate the influence of growing environments to rice resistance to these pests. Thus, eleven rice varieties including 6 upland NERICA, 2 Oryza glaberrima and 3 O. sativa were grown at four agro ecological zones of Benin. After harvest, samples of 1500 grains of each genotype were infested with 20 adults of S. oryzae (10 males and 10 females) and 1500 additional ones were infested with 50 eggs of S. cerealella. Results showed significant effect of agro ecological zones on pest incidence and on varietal resistance as well. O. glaberrima varieties (TOG 5681 and CG 14) were the most resistant in each location whereas the resistance of NERICA and Sativa varieties varied from tolerant to susceptible according to the growing ecology. This result highlights the impact of growing environment on rice resistance status and will provide the best advice to farmers on how to choose best genetic material according to cropping ecology.
Submergence Tolerance in Irrigated and Rainfed Lowland Rice Varieties: Agro-Morphological Basis for Rice Genetic Improvement in Southern Benin  [PDF]

Objective: The study was carried out, on the rice perimeter of Southern Benin, to evaluate the response of irrigated and lowland rice varieties to the complete and partial submergence using agro-morphological traits. Method: Thus, 15 rice varieties were submerged in the field during 60 days according to split plot experimental design with two factors and three replications. Agro-morphological parameters such as plant height, number of tillers, the distance of internodes and the number of internodes were measured respectively at 13 days and 45 days. After harvest, some traits such as length, width and thickness of grains, panicle length, number of primary and secondary branches, the average number of empty grains and full grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight were recorded. Results: Very highly significant (P ≤ 0.0001) differences were identified between agro morphological parameters according to the type of submergence while the factor type of immersion has significant influence on the number of internodes at 45 days after transplanting (P ≤ 0.01). The submergence was not significant effect on tillering and length of internodes. Conclusion: The plant height, the weight of thousand grains and the average number of empty grains per panicle constitute key aspects and have been essential for evaluating tolerance to submergence in Benin.

Abstract: Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are a family of enzymes which catalyze the oxidation of reactive aldehydes to their corresponding carboxylic acids. Here we summarize molecular genetic and biochemical analyses of selected Arabidopsis ALDH genes. Aldehyde molecules are very reactive and are involved in many metabolic processes but when they accumulate in excess they become toxic. Thus activity of aldehyde dehydrogenases is important in regulating the homeostasis of aldehydes. Overexpression of some ALDH genes demonstrated an improved abiotic stress tolerance. Despite the fact that several reports are available describing a role for specific ALDHs, their precise physiological roles are often still unclear. Therefore a number of genetic and biochemical tools have been generated to address the function with an emphasis on stress-related ALDHs. ALDHs exert their functions in different cellular compartments and often in a developmental and tissue specific manner. To investigate substrate specificity, catalytic efficiencies have been determined using a range of substrates varying in carbon chain length and degree of carbon oxidation. Mutational approaches identified amino acid residues critical for coenzyme usage and enzyme activities.
Semantic-Communicative Structure and Word Order in Mandarin Chinese  [PDF]

In some languages more than in others, communicative considerations—such as what a message is about, what information is new or old, and whether this or that participant is in the Speaker’s focus of attention—constrain the structure of a sentence. The goal of the present paper is to describe how different Semantic-Communicative Structures affect word order in simple mono-transitive sentences without coverbs or adverbial phrases in Mandarin Chinese. The discussion is couched in the Meaning-Text framework, relevant parts of which are clarified at the onset of the paper. We argue that Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) sentences are communicatively unmarked in that they do not signal any particular communicative consideration. Other word orders, however, specifically encode certain communicative considerations. This is the case of Prolepsisi-Subjecti-Verb-Object (PiSiVO) and Object-Subject-Verb (OSV) sentences, which are discussed here.

Abstract: We report on a 32-year-old male patient who presented to the emergency room for abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting. The patient experienced these symptoms for the last 3 months and was taken in charge on an outpatient basis. Assessment in the emergency room showed hemodynamic collapse, there were no signs of acute surgical abdomen. Emergent cardiac echogram showed severely dilated hypokinetic cardiomyopathy. The diagnosis of acute heart failure associated with nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia was retained. A review of the pertinent literature is presented.
What does high NT-proBNP mean in septic shock patients? A part of the puzzle

Abstract: In a this issue of Critical Care, Mokart and coworkers [1] report the results of a prospective cohort study evaluating plasma amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) as a marker of prognosis and cardiac dysfunction in cancer patients with septic shock. They included 51 patients, mainly with hematological malignancies. By univariate analysis, Logistic Organ Dysfunction score, early NT-proBNP level and recent hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation were associated with intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. In a multivariate analysis, NT-proBNP level on day 2 was the unique parameter associated with mortality. The area under the curve was 0.87. Transthoracic echocardiography was repeated in 45 patients. NT-proBNP level on day 2 but not on day 1 was significantly higher in patients presenting a left or right cardiac dysfunction during the course of the septic shock.BNP and its amino-terminal fragment, NT-proBNP, are mainly produced by myocytes in response to a ventricular volume expansion or pressure overload. Their levels in blood are, therefore, accurate markers of ventricular dysfunction and have been shown to be associated with mortality in various cardiac diseases. In ICU patients, although BNP and NT-proBNP are not correlated with filling pressures [2,3], low levels of BNP have been shown to have a high negative predictive value for the presence of cardiogenic shock [2]. In septic shock patients, several studies have reported very high levels of BNP and NT-proBNP [4-7] and have suggested that NT-proBNP is an independent marker of prognosis in this population [6,7]. It remains unclear, however, whether NT-proBNP is high in these patients because they all present with a certain degree of cardiac dysfunction and whether the NT-proBNP level is associated with mortality by reflecting the intensity of this dysfunction. More than 40,000 pages are indexed in the WWW Browser Engine Google for the keyword "cell factory". Early in 1999 the European Union launched a research programme on the cell factory (http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/rtdinf21/en/key/03.html webcite), stating that ? The concept of the "bio-product" is as old as the knowledge involved in the making of bread, beer, wine or cheese. However, recent techniques and knowledge in molecular biology and genetics mean that living cells – from bacteria to man – are now becoming real "factories". In vast fermentation vats, engineers can direct and control natural metabolism in order to produce all sorts of substances with a high added value: proteins, amino acids, alcohols, citric acid, solvents and even bio-plastics. This industrial mastery of the mechanisms of life opens up revolutionary perspectives in the development of new kinds of medicines, foodstuffs with specific nutritional properties, and biodegradable biochemical products ?
