Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the performance in Chess and in Mathematics of the college players in Cabanatuan City, Philippines. Specif-ically, it aimed to determine the respondents’ mathematics and chess per-formances, their playing styles and their beliefs regarding chess players and mathematicians. The descriptive correlational research design was utilized in this study and the data gathered by the researcher were tallied and tabulated using frequency, percentage, mean and Pearson’s r. Furthermore, open-ended questions were used to solicit remarks/comments from the respondents regarding the role of chess in enhancing their thinking skills. It was found out that the general weighted average (GWA) in Mathematics of the respondents was above average. Most of them are barangay/school level champions. Males are tactician type of players while females are positional players. A respondent who performed better in higher chess competition also performed better or obtained higher GWA in Mathematics. Furthermore, the respondents believed that a chess player can be a good mathematician especially if they start playing early in life and if chess was a part of the school curriculum since playing chess continuously has helped them in developing and improving their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

BMC Ophthalmology , 2011, DOI: 10.1186/1471-2415-11-11
Abstract: Retrospective case series. Medical records were reviewed for all patients completing surgery at the Wilmer Laser Vision Center in the summer quarter of 2007 and the summer quarter of 2009. Outcome measures were the proportions of treated refractive errors, the proportion of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) vs. laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and the mean age of patients in each quarter. Chi-square test was used to compare the proportions of treated refractive errors and the proportions of procedures; two-tailed t-test to compare the mean age of patients; and two-tailed z-test to compare proportions of grouped refractive errors in 2007 vs. 2009; alpha = 0.05 for all tests. Refractive errors were grouped by the spherical equivalent of the manifest refraction and were considered "low myopia" for 6 diopters (D) of myopia or less, "high myopia" for more than 6 D, and "hyperopia" for any hyperopia. Billing data were reviewed to obtain the volume of premium IOLs.Volume of laser refractive procedures decreased by at least 30%. The distribution of proportions of treated refractive errors did not change (p = 0.10). The proportion of high myopes, however, decreased (p = 0.05). The proportions of types of procedure changed, with an increase in the proportion of PRK between 2007 and 2009 (p = 0.02). The mean age of patients did not change [42.4 ± 14.4 (standard deviation) years in 2007 vs. 39.6 ± 14.5 years in 2009; p = 0.4]. Astigmatism-correcting IOL and presbyopia-correcting IOL volumes increased 15-fold and three-fold, respectively, between 2007 and 2009.Volume of excimer laser refractive surgery decreased by at least 30% between 2007 and 2009. No significant change in mean age or in the distribution of refractive error was seen, although the proportion of high myopes decreased between summer quarters of 2007 and 2009. PRK gained as a proportion of total cases. Premium IOL volume increased, but still comprised a very small proportion of total IOL volume. In Oc

Abstract:

A study was undertaken in February 2012 to understand the knowledge and practices of rice farmers about weedy rice in two municipalities of Iloilo, Philippines. The specific objectives of the study were to establish what rice farmers know about weedy rice, examine rice farmers’ practices in managing weedy rice, and recommend policies on weedy rice management based on the results of the study. Farmers’ knowledge of weedy rice did not differ much between two villages. Results showed that 41% from the second most affected village and 33% from the most affected village thought that weedy rice cannot reduce the market value of the harvested rice. Majority of the farmers (68%) responded that awns can be absent in some weedy rice and about 40% of the farmers did not know that seeds of weedy rice have dormancy. Cutting the weedy rice panicles at harvest, as the best way of reducing weedy rice, was practiced by majority of the respondents (82%) from the most affected village. Our study suggests that there is a need to increase awareness about weedy rice among Asian farmers.

Non-scientific information about science in the dynamics of information and memory - DOI: 10.3395/reciis.v3i3.288en

Abstract: This paper raises issues related to specific cultural products – science fiction movies - and analyzes them in the light of the field of information science. It questions the role of science in the context of fiction and information. It intends to establish the status of a piece of fictional information about science. We believe that the dynamics of the memory of the genre is related to the very dynamics of non-scientific information about science. We analyze movie remakes, and take each movie as a moment of a major narrative about the subject science. The approach of knowledge from the point of view of fictional creation, considering information as a structuring element of a discursive phenomenon of the movie culture, is analyzed in the context of cultural dynamics and a praxis of memory. We assume that remakes, by presenting different versions of the same fictional narrative, reorganize facts that had been presented in the first version, aiming at achieving a balance between new and already seen. We present the analyses that have been performed for two movies: Time Machine (1960, 2002) and War of the Worlds (1952, 2005) taking science and the actor as reference, and we highlight some features of this type of information.

Disruptive Colouration and Perceptual Grouping
Irene Espinosa, Innes C. Cuthill
PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0087153
Abstract: Camouflage is the primary defence of many animals and includes multiple strategies that interfere with figure-ground segmentation and object recognition. While matching background colours and textures is widespread and conceptually straightforward, less well explored are the optical ‘tricks’, collectively called disruptive colouration, that exploit perceptual grouping mechanisms. Adjacent high contrast colours create false edges, but this is not sufficient for an object’s shape to be broken up; some colours must blend with the background. We test the novel hypothesis that this will be particularly effective when the colour patches on the animal appear to belong to, not merely different background colours, but different background objects. We used computer-based experiments where human participants had to find cryptic targets on artificial backgrounds. Creating what appeared to be bi-coloured foreground objects on bi-coloured backgrounds, we generated colour boundaries that had identical local contrast but either lay within or between (illusory) objects. As predicted, error rates for targets matching what appeared to be different background objects were higher than for targets which had otherwise identical local contrast to the background but appeared to belong to single background objects. This provides evidence for disruptive colouration interfering with higher-level feature integration in addition to previously demonstrated low-level effects involving contour detection. In addition, detection was impeded in treatments where targets were on or in close proximity to multiple background colour or tone boundaries. This is consistent with other studies which show a deleterious influence of visual ‘clutter’ or background complexity on search.
