Study of Efficacy of Various Split Applications of Inorganic Nitrogen on Potato Crop  [PDF]

Abstract:
Series of experiments have been conducted to find the optimized dose and efficacy of nitrogen to fulfill the requirements of plant at each level by making split doses. Being most important macro nutrient, afield trial was conducted to study the effect of without applying nitrogen (control) single nitrogen (N) application at planting time on yield and nitrogen uptake of potato in comparison to various split applications. Data were collected about plants vegetative growth, total yield and qualitative factors (TSS, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and protein percentage in tuber). Experimental design used was Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having seven treatments with three replications. Data were analyzed by using standard statistical techniques. Overall, qualitative characters of tubers and yield enhanced with split nitrogen application as compared to all nitrogen applied once at planting time whereas, there was no significant difference between tuber nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and protein contents.

Abstract: Salicylic acid (SA) is a vital plant growth regulator providing promising role in plant development and adopts defense mechanism to abiotic stresses. Salinity is the most limiting abiotic factor for plant development and growth changes in watermelon by producing reactive oxygen species and ultimately oxidative stress. The present study was aimed to investigate the mechanism involved in salt stress alleviation in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thanb. Mavs.) through the foliar application of salicylic acid. Watermelon cv. Charleston Gray was grown under moderate saline regime of 3 ds·m-1 NaCl and sprayed with salicylic acid with four level (0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 mmol/L) compared along with control. SA @ 5.0 mmol/L was found to be very effective in mitigation of salt stress. SA was found to be very effective in alleviation of salinity stress by produced antioxidants and acted as osmo-regulator.

Abstract: Background: Internal splintage of open tibial fractures had gained acceptance as a preferred method of early stabilization of such injuries. Patients and Methods: Fifty-five patients had been operated upon. They were followed from July 2008 to March 2013 (56 months) with an average time of 39 months. The final results had been evaluated through a scheme including 7 parameters: pain, union, malunion, infection, range motions of nearby joints, implant and technical failure and activity and returning to the same work. Results: According to previous parameters, union was achieved in 52 cases (94.5%) at an average time of 20 weeks (16 - 52 weeks) with 5.5% incidence of nonunion. Excellent and good ranges of knee and ankle motions were achieved at final follow-up visit in 49 cases (89.09%). The incidence of complication was acceptable mainly malunion 7.3%, deep infection 12.7%, implant and technical failure 9.1% full activity and returning to the same work achieved in 89.1%. The overall net results of our series are as follows: excellent—19 cases (34.5%), good—27 cases (49.1%), fair—6 cases (10.9%) and poor—3 cases (5.5%). Conclusion: Utilizing unreamed interlocking nail for open tibial fractures is a good method of treatment particularly those of grade (II), and (IIIA).

Abstract:


In recent years, numerous researches have been carried out with purpose of predicting motor vehicle crashes on transportation facilities as freeways and urban or rural highways. Accident process can be modeled successfully with assuming a dual-state data-generating process. Based on this assumption, road components like intersections or road segments have two states of perfectly safe and unsafe. Zero-inflated regression models are applied to model accidents usually in cases of preponderance of excess zero data in crash data. We handle in this research, the investigation into effective factors on frequency and severity of accidents on urban highways and use crash data of Mash had-Iran urban highways as a case study. We use in this study, the Poisson, Negative binomial, Zero-inflated Poisson and Zero-inflated Negative binomial regression models for modeling accidents, and traffic flow and road geometry related variables as in dependent variables of models. In addition to identifying effective factors on crash occurrence probability, we deal with comparison of models, evaluate and prove the efficiency of Zero-inflated regression models against traditional Poisson and Negative binomial models.


Assessment of Inventory Control Practices in Nigeria Industries

Abstract: Nigerian industries were grouped into three categories-small-, medium- and large-scale to determine their response to the practice of quality control systems. Area of inventory examined includes manpower, raw material and finished goods. Other inventory inbuilt factors such as order time, lot size, cost of order, number of order, demand and production rate were also assessed. The evaluation of data collected from industries for the aforementioned factors was done using simple statistics based on average response out of total responses. The results of the study showed that the size of industry, small-, medium- and large-scale, has a significant effect on both the size of staff and the level of involvement in inventory management of both the raw material and the finished product.
Nigerian Users` Perception of Performance of Carburetion and Injection Fuel Systems for Mercedes-Benz Cars

Abstract: Arguments often arise at every corner as to which one, carburetor or injector is better in term of performance. In this study therefore user perception of performance of carburetion and injection fuel systems for Mercedes-Benz cars is investigated. This was done by randomly sampling the opinions of the Mercedes-Benz users and maintenance specialists, through questionnaire administration and oral interview. Analysis of responses was done using a simple percentage of positive or negative response over the total responses. The results of the study showed that injection system is preferred for its overall performance, durability and efficiency, while carburetion system is satisfactory based on its spare parts availability and ease of maintenance.
Assessment of Functional Performance of Machinery in a Local Beverage Company in Nigeria

Abstract: Daily wear and tear of industrial machinery, while performing its intending functions, could not only affect the quality but also affect the output performance. In this study, the functional performance of bottle washing and filling machines in a local beverage industry is assessed. This was done using output data from both machines for the period of two months for limca and goldspot drinks. Analyses of the data were done via the statistical tests such as t-test and F-test. The results of the tests showed that bottle washing machine output performance is satisfactory in washing both limca and goldspot bottles while, in filling machine, there is a gradual shortfall in performance. This calls for immediate attention in term of putting in place a formidable replacement plan.
Development of a Changeable Die Forging Machine for Small Scale Forging Industries

Abstract: Many local forging industries are witnessing a desideratum in output everyday as a result of continual presence of crude methods of operation in such industries. In this study, mechanisation of the local forging process is achieved by developing a low cost changeable die forging machine using locally sourced material. In the development, the components designed for include cam and follower, camshaft, keys, die pins and the anvil. The cam and hammer are so designed such that their operation is simple and effective. The designed components were then fabricated and assembled. The test carried out on the assembled machine shows that it can work effectively on metals with energy of penetration limited to 30 Joules.
A Prediction of Made in Nigeria Steel Bars Demand and Supply Using Regression Method

Abstract: Nigerian population is increasing daily; as a result of this increase, demand for various facilities, being industrial or domestic, would arise. It is, therefore, necessary that a strategy be devised to predict the future demands so as to plan for outputs such that it will always meet such demands. In this study, future demands and supplies of steel bars for Nigeria are predicted using Linear Regression (LR) approach. Information related to past demands and supplies of steel bars were extracted from relevant documents obtained from organisations. These data were used to formulate the trends equations. The correlations of the actual data to the calculated data showed that the trend was a good representation of the data. The results showed that the predicted supplies (2005 to 2010) are not always meeting demands and the annually increments in demand and supply were in good agreement with the established/projected Nigerian population annual growth rate of between 2.3 to 3.3%. It is clear that improving the present production capacity of the indigenous steel plants, among other consolidated measures, perhaps, will be expected to solve the problem of availability of made in Nigeria concrete reinforcement steel bars in future.
A Survey of Failure in Mechanical Crankshafts of Automobile

Abstract: In this study mechanical crankshaft failure for automobile is examined. This was done using data gathered by oral interviews and questionnaire administration on mechanical failure of crankshafts. The data collected were analysed using statistical methods based on probability. With this technique, probability of failure for each category of automobile considered-private, commercial cars and buses were evaluated. The results obtained showed that private cars enjoyed lowest failure rate at the initial stage while commercial buses had the highest failure rate. At the later periods all the categories considered had their failure rates very close to one another and at the same time they are insignificant (very small). At this point reliability gained its highest momentum. This showed that increased enlightenment campaign among the various stakeholders in automobile industries has gone a long way in improving reliability of mechanical crankshafts in automobile.
