Review of "Scaffolding in Tissue Engineering", by Peter X. Ma and Jennifer Elisseeff (Editors)

Abstract: Despite the significance of scaffolds for TE, until recently no book had been entirely dedicated to this subject. Having noticed this void, Peter X. Ma and Jennifer H. Elisseeff decided to put together a stellar team of international contributors to bring into existence "Scaffolding in Tissue Engineering". Scaffolding is a complex subject and a dynamic area of research, which involves the interaction of various areas of knowledge, such that new scaffolds are continually being developed, fabricated, improved, transformed and evaluated. Hence, it could be expected that the preparation of a comprehensive book about scaffolding in TE and, most of all, the coordination of the contributions of a large group of experts in TE (but with different backgrounds) would be an arduous task. All these efforts resulted in an extraordinary book. As a consequence, the comments in this review should be seen as positive criticisms and, who knows, suggestions for future editions of the book."Scaffolding in Tissue Engineering", an encyclopedic book 624 pages long (not including the index at the end), is divided into 38 chapters written by 82 contributors. The chapters are arranged into four parts: scaffolding materials, scaffold fabrication technologies, materials modifications and properties and tissue engineering applications. Most certainly, the editors attempted to make the book more didactic by classifying and grouping the chapters into four different areas of a subject that is difficult to be compartmentalized. For example, it may be sometimes hard to demarcate where fabrication ends and modification begins.After reading "Scaffolding in Tissue Engineering", the basic conclusion is that all chapters are individually very well and carefully written, with plenty of helpful pictures, graphs and tables, and have a comprehensive list of references at the end. The chapters are objective and relatively short and this book will be certainly useful to beginners as well as to senior researcher

Abstract: The book is divided into 7 chapters, written by 15 expert contributors. In the introduction, it looks into the possible interactions of nanotechnology and biomedicine, and discusses how these two converging technologies can be amalgamated to create a new interdisciplinary field. As part of this discussion, concepts such as nanotechnology and nanobiomedicine are precisely defined. In the introduction there is also a brief but useful description of the following chapters.Chapter 1 summarizes the current status quo of the field worldwide (more specifically, USA, Europe and Japan). Although this chapter is quite comprehensive and detailed, there is the risk that in such fast developing field this kind of data will become rapidly outdated. Furthermore, this chapter could be enriched by the inclusion of a short summary about other countries. For example, are there any signs of biomedical nanothechnology initiatives in South America or in Asian countries other than Japan? Despite that, the analyzes in chapter 1 can be successfully used as models for those interested in producing similar work, either more updated or focusing in other countries or regions of the world. Chapters 2 through 4 describe the state of the art of biomedical nanotechnology research in 3 important subfields, already mentioned: drug delivery; prostheses and implants; and diagnostics and screening technologies. These are excellent chapters that have as merit the explanation of quite complex concepts in a simple manner. The figures and pictures are extraordinarily simple (but of good quality) and helpful, and, along with excellent tables, complement the straightforward style of these chapters. The following chapters discuss the role of nanotechnology for biodefense, a very opportune topic, and the social and economic aspects related to the emergence of biomedical nanotechnology. The final chapter focuses on safety and regulatory issues. The references at the end of each chapter are very useful for those

Abstract: More than 50 years ago, G. Polya wrote a book on problem solving strategies which became very popular, "How to Solve It" [1]. Brigg's book is not intended to replace, but rather to complement Polya's classic book. For example, not only Polya's principles of analytical problem solving are cited and discussed in Brigg's book, but they are also adapted to computational problems. In fact, the interplay between the analytical and computational approaches to problem solving is very useful since computers became part of our daily lives.One of the main qualities of "Ants, Bikes & Clocks: Problem Solving for Undergraduates" is that it is a pleasant book to read. It is well written and the understanding of the text is facilitated by numerous tables, graphs, charts and figures. This readability is especially important considering the main target of the book, undergraduate students. But everyone would certainly enjoy browsing the chapters, reading the small notes on the sides of the pages, going through the various and inventive examples, etc. I did it! Another interesting aspect of Brigg's book is how the exercises are organized. At the end of the chapters, each exercise is followed by hints and respective answer. In addition, full solutions for all exercises can be found at the end of the book. Although the author cautions against checking the full solutions before trying to solve the problems, it is certainly good to know that the full solutions are within reach.In summary, this is an excellent and opportune book about problem solving, not only for undergraduates, but for everyone who is interested in problem solving strategies.

Abstract: This book begins with a brief history of science and orthopaedic biomechanics, where the authors discuss how the conflict and inconsistencies of accepted paradigms are challenged by new tools and experiments, leading to new ways of addressing problems in the field. Although there are often "titanic" struggles involved in making such paradigm shifts, conflict is often a necessary first step in the advancement of knowledge. This book not only presents the current knowledge in the field, but also has the objective of motivating new questions that could result in future advances.An exceptional team of contributing authors collaborated in writing the various chapters covering different topics in orthopaedic biomechanics and mechano-biology including: analysis of muscle and joint loads, kinematics, biomechanics of musculoskeletal tissues (bone, cartilage, meniscus, tendons and ligaments), cartilage and bone tissue engineering, spine and artificial joint biomechanics, etc. There is also an excellent chapter on biomaterials. The chapters are well-written and the figures are informative and of good quality. Each chapter is complemented by an extensive list of references.An important characteristic of this book is that it can be used by any student or researcher in orthopaedic biomechanics, regardless of instructional level or background. Basic concepts are always well explained before they are used. For example, in chapter 1 Newton's laws are reviewed before the forces involved in the analysis of muscle and joint systems are calculated. Being an interdisciplinary subject, many times topics in biomechanics make use of concepts from biology and biochemistry. Whenever such cross-disciplinary ideas present they are well explained; for example, proteoglycans in chapter 5 and intracellular signaling pathways in chapter 6.In summary, this is an excellent book in orthopaedic biomechanics that will greatly benefit all members of the biomechanics community. Abstract: the aim of this article is to show that overseas, as well as in metropolitan portugal, the misericórdias (catholic lay assistance orders) were fundamental institutions, which played several relevant roles. they came to be guarantors of a public assistance system, moralizing instruments for the communities, local power nuclei and, consequently, homogenizing structures of an empire geographically discontinuous and whose specific characteristics were as varied as those found in its institutional and administrative models. this article also analyzes the conflicts that overseas misericórdias went through when they tried to keep the monopoly of assistance activities, always with the help of the government, which could so guarantee its sovereign power over institutions that were real centers of power and, consequently, constantly beset by representatives of the catholic church. however, not even royal support was capable of keeping the misericórdias from declining or starting the 18th century in death agony everywhere in the empire, but in brazil.

Abstract: using the concepts of the collective action and actors with interests and the assumption that the poor relief and health care field was politically defined since the early modern period, this paper has two main purposes: on the one hand, to analyze the construction of the portuguese assistance system, identifying its lines of continuity during the ancient regime. on the other hand, to evaluate the reasons why the crown of the 16th century was more efficient when compared with the governments of the second half of the 18th century, in terms of reform of the social structures and implementation of a new paradigm of assistance. in both cases, taking into account the differences between the political and social contexts of those two moments.

The aim of this research was to assess the utility of bioimpedance measurement as a rapid, cost-effective, and noninvasive adjunct to digital rectal examination and PSA in differentiating tumor from normal prostatic tissue. Methods: Three hundred men were examined for signs and symptoms of prostate disorders. 147 patients with a digital rectal examination indicating a positive result underwent a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. A biopsy was advised for 103 of the men, of whom 50 completed the study. Before undergoing biopsy, an examination with the EIS (electro interstitial scan) system using bioimpedance and chronoamperometry was performed. In reference to the biopsy results (negative or positive), a statistical analysis of the EIS data and PSA was conducted using receiver operating characteristic curves to determine the specificity and sensitivity of each test. Results: The PSA test had a sensitivity of 73.9% and specificity of 51.9% using a cutoff value >4 and a sensitivity of 52.2% and specificity of 81.5% using a cutoff value ≥5.7 and P = 0.03. The delta of the electrical conductivity (DE) of the left foot-right foot pathway had a sensitivity of 62.5% and specificity of 85.2%, with a cutoff value ≤-5 and P = 0.0001. Algorithms comprising the delta of electrical conductivity and PSA showed a sensitivity of 91.5% and a specificity of 59.3%, with a cutoff value ≤-10.52 and P = 0.0003. Conclusion: The EIS system had a very good specificity of 85.2%. However, the sensitivity of 62.5% would be a problem. Using a PSA reference >4.1 ng/mL, the adjunctive use of bioimpedance and chronoamperometry provided by EIS technology could raise the sensitivity from 73.9% to 91.5% and the specificity from 51.9% to 59.3% in prostate cancer screening.
