Alpha (Osorno) , 2011,
The figure of Lope de Aguirre proves to be particularly suggestive when considering the aspects related to concepts of authority and power in America during the second half of the 16th century. With the present work, we pretend to analyze the way of constructing the image of power in Relación de todo lo que sucedió en la jornada de Amaga y Dorado of Lope de Aguirre, one of the mara ones that took part in the journey. This text is a principle source of what occurred in the expedition. The characterization of the personalities illustrates the ideas concerning authority and power that the author and the protagonists of the journey had in mind.
Intraspecific variation of Bothrops pubescens (cope, 1869) venom in Uruguay (serpentes: viperidae)
Morais, V.;Baraibar, M.;Carreira, S.;
Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins including Tropical Diseases , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-91992006000400007
Abstract: in uruguay, there was no information about the variations degree in bothrops pubescens venoms until the present work, in which we investigated intraspecific venom variation using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (sds-page). we found some differences in the venom protein profile; however, they were not related to the parameters studied (geographic distribution, weight, sex, and captivity time). moreover, we distinguished two different groups in relation to band densities at 49 and 57 kda. specimens with predominant density in the 49kda band tend to be predominantly females. weight distribution in this group extended for all the range (150-1500 g) with an average weight of 720 g. the other group (57kda predominant band) showed restricted weight range (150-400 g) with an average weight of 280 g. cluster analysis was also performed. the variability observed in the venom profile probably corresponds to genetic variations.
Protein Oxidative Damage at the Crossroads of Cellular Senescence, Aging, and Age-Related Diseases

Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/919832
Abstract: Protein damage mediated by oxidation, protein adducts formation with advanced glycated end products and with products of lipid peroxidation, has been implicated during aging and age-related diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases. Increased protein modification has also been described upon replicative senescence of human fibroblasts, a valid model for studying aging in vitro. However, the mechanisms by which these modified proteins could impact on the development of the senescent phenotype and the pathogenesis of age-related diseases remain elusive. In this study, we performed in silico approaches to evidence molecular actors and cellular pathways affected by these damaged proteins. A database of proteins modified by carbonylation, glycation, and lipid peroxidation products during aging and age-related diseases was built and compared to those proteins identified during cellular replicative senescence in vitro. Common cellular pathways evidenced by enzymes involved in intermediate metabolism were found to be targeted by these modifications, although different tissues have been examined. These results underscore the potential effect of protein modification in the impairment of cellular metabolism during aging and age-related diseases.
Symbiotic effectiveness and ecological characterization of indigenous Rhizobium loti populations in Uruguay
Baraibar, Amalia;Frioni, Llillian;Guedes, Maria Elena;Ljunggren, Hans;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X1999000600012
Abstract: the objectives of this work were to describe the distribution, density and seasonal variation of the indigenous populations of rhizobium loti in different uruguayan soils and to determine the symbiotic effectiveness and stress tolerance factors of different isolates, both with the aim of obtaining selected strains to re-introduce as inoculants in lotus pastures. r. loti was present in ten soils studied and their densities varied from year to year and within each soil. all the isolates nodulated lotus corniculatus effectively. the nodules in lotus pedunculatus and lotus subbiflorus were small, red on the surface and ineffective in nitrogen fixation. the study of 50 isolates from the ten soils showed high variability in their symbiotic efficiency and tolerance to ph. the indigenous population was acid tolerant in culture medium (ph 4.5), 83% of them could grow at ph 4.5 in 3 days. this work showed that there was a great diversity between the strains of r. loti isolated from uruguayan soils and supports the importance of selecting among them the most efficient and resistant strains to be included in the inoculants.

These results underscore the potential effect of protein modification in the impairment of cellular metabolism during aging and age-related diseases. 1. Introduction Hayflick and Moorhead established the concept that primary cells isolated from mammalian tissues undergo only a finite number of divisions when grown in culture, without spontaneous transformation [1, 2]. On reaching their replicative limit, such cells were termed “senescent” and were viewed as aged cells. Since then, replicative senescence has been considered as a cellular model of aging that may provide insight into organismal aging [3–5]. More recently, different studies have shown the occurrence of cellular senescence in vivo [6, 7]. These senescent cells are causally implicated in generating age-related phenotypes, and their removal can prevent or delay tissue dysfunction and extend healthspan [8]. Indeed, whether and how cellular senescence is related to organismal aging, age-related diseases, frailty, and dysfunction is one of the major open questions in the biology of aging field. A hallmark of aging both at the cellular and organismal level is the accumulation of damaged macromolecules due to increased oxidative stress and failure of protein repair and maintenance systems [9, 10]. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are routinely produced as a byproduct of aerobic metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation. In addition, ROS production and accumulation are usually increased during disease pathogenesis

Abstract: Introducción. Introduction. Disability produced by locomotor pahtology causes a loss in working hours and indirect costs that are increasing at a growing rate. The aims of this study are to estimate the costs in total working hours lost caused by this pathology in two health areas of Navarra with 441,600 inhabitants, to obtain standards for the duration and incidence of sick leave and to study the relation between the average duration of sick leave and variables such as the geographical accessibility of the rehabilitation services, residence in a rural or urban milieu, and between the different health areas. Methods. We study all the processes of temporary disability due to pathology of the locomotor system in Health Areas I and III of Navarra in 1997 and 1998, taking different variables into account. We make a descriptive study of the patho

The process of economic and social change that Navarra has undergone in recent decades has been associated with the arrival of a growing flow of immigrants since the start of the new century. They have had a decisive influence as a factor of economic change in terms of production increase and internal demand. A new Navarra is being built thanks to the phenomenon of migration. In the first place, we analyse their impact on demographic growth. Their influence on the labour market, with its highlights and shadows, is evaluated. Foreigners already are about 10% of the active population and their presence in some productive sectors is decisive for their viability. The dysfunctions and problems of the labour market are reviewed, especially the question of accidents. Finally, the behaviour of the indicators of temporary disability of this collective are set out. Although this phenomenon has brought an imbalance in some spheres of social policy (education, housing, health), it can be said that the model of integration in Navarra is based on a generous welfare system, a social climate that is in general tolerant, and sustained economic growth.
