Abstract: this research has the objective of proposing some reflections about the theme of people who take care of the elderly, taking as the theoretical, conceptual, and political reference the brazilian public health system. it is broken down into four topics. first of all, i attempt to briefly discuss the interfaces of the theme aging and health with the purpose of laying a theoretical groundwork where this is proposed. secondly, i try to present the public health system (sus) as a scenario for the discussion on the issue of taking care of the elderly. thirdly, i present some paradigms about this care as a human attitude and bring to the discussion the person who takes care of the elderly. finally, i present some final considerations.

Abstract: objectives: to know the perceptions of undergraduate nursing students regarding the way they view the body of the client and to categorize the themes that emerged from the students' perceptions. methods: the data were obtained through unstructured interviews of 20 undergraduate nursing students who were in difference placement in the undergraduate curriculum at the federal university of s?o paulo. content analysis technique was used to identify and categorize the themes. results: the following themes have emerged: adaptation to the care of the client body, body as an object, invasion of the client privacy, student-client interaction, corporal expression, sick body and loss of the autonomy, knowing one's own body prior to care for the body of someone else, depersonalized body, stigmatization, influences of values, body and gender; and representation. final considerations: the topic "body" consists of a universe of objective and subjective elements that might be considered when teaching undergraduate nursing students how to take care of the body of the client.

Abstract: objective: to know the meaning of the aging process for military personnel who served for 30 years or more in the brazilian army. methods: a qualitative exploratory study. interviews were conducted with 18 soldiers, the youngest was 48 years and the oldest was 72 years of age. the analysis revealed three categories: aging and old age; retirement from the brazilian army; preparing for the retirement. results: the principle results showed that for those in the military the loss of functional capacity, the adaptation to life outside the barracks, and continuous reinvention of living with family members are fundamental questions in the context of transition from active to retired. conclusion: we hope this study will enable the expansion of reflections about aging in the military, to implement actions to prepare for life in retirement - working not only with the military, but also with their families.

Abstract: objective: this qualitative study aimed to get to know the meaning of the experience and training program in the reality of the single health system (ver-sus) for healthcare students' education. methods: participants were ten students from public and private schools. semi-structured questions were used for data collection. the answers were subject to thematic analysis, revealing three categories: knowledge about sus in the education process; ver-sus as an instrument for insertion into academic policies and/or other social movements; ver-sus and academic education. results: the results showed that participation in ver-sus contributed to individual improvement, highlighting its importance as a public policy. it represented a triggering factor of participation in social and especially student movements. despite the quality of the experience, application by the group will be difficult, due to the faculty members' lack of knowledge and/or little interest in sus. conclusion: ver-sus is important for education, despite its small range, and can contribute to the political education of future professionals. it permits interdisciplinary and multiprofessional insertion into education.

Abstract: this qualitative study focuses on peri-menopausal and post-menopausal experience and its signs and symptoms for women with and without use of hormone replacement therapy (hrt). empirical data were obtained through interviews with 11 women (range: 45 to 59 years) with or without hrt at different health clinics in the municipality of s?o paulo, brazil. the analysis used the hermeneutic method. most significantly, women who are not on hrt present peri-menopausal symptoms, but they "live with" such symptoms; meanwhile, women in use of isoflavone rely on alternative therapies for the bothersome symptoms; women using hrt report a feeling of wellbeing. the article suggests the importance of training health professionals to understand the peri-menopausal and post-menopausal periods as part of the aging process, and thus as a vital rather than pathological process.

Abstract: this study based on the theory of the social representation that subsidized the apprehension and analysis of how nursing students had perceived and represented the body of their clients and the emergent subjectives of contact and relation of taking care. it was carried with 20 female students of four grades of the nursing faculty of the unifesp. the data were obtained using interview and analysed by content analysis method (categorial analysis) that showed the following categories: body object, stigmatisation, student-client relationship, body communication, privacy's intrusion and embarrassing.

Abstract: this qualitative study aims at identifying which mechanisms are used by elderly patients to express pain when they are not able to use verbal communication. it relies on the accounts and interpretations of 6 nurses working in a clinical service unit dedicated to the treatment of the elderly at a hospital in s?o paulo. data were collected through semi-structured interviews, recorded and transcribed for hermeneutic analysis. data were grouped together in selected analytical categories related to pain and communication, which showed that nurses' interactions with patients notice attitudes and changes. the prompt interpretation and identification of these cues and symptoms of pain lead to better nursing care.

Abstract: school has an important role in sexual orientation during adolescence. this study aimed at identifying the knowledge and performance of fundamental and high school's teachers regarding sexuality. data of this exploratory and descriptive study were obtained though a questionnaire, which was applied to a hundred teachers from the public network school system of the county of jandira, sp. results demonstrated that, despite subject relevance for the teachers, they do not have the use of enough knowledge to promote sexual orientation to adolescents, adressing biological issues of sexuality instead of the involving feelings and values. it was concluded that training and education programs about sexuality in adolescence are necessary to this population.

Abstract: the present study approaches an innovative activity in the nursing teaching area. this activity, theoretical-experiential, known as the "corporal experience workshop" is intended to promote body awareness, understand the fundamentals related to corporality, and improve the reflections about the own self and the "other's" body when undergoing nursing care. the investigation was carried out with first grade undergraduation nursing students of the universidade federal de s?o paulo - unifesp/epm, and presents a descriptive study where the phenomenon is described and explained, and at the same time, it seeks to investigate some aspects concerning experiences the participating 202 students were submitted to during the activities developed in the workshops, during in the yaers 1997, 1998 and 1999.

Abstract: this study presents a qualitative approach, and used the method of simple observation. it was carried out with eight children who were hospitalized in two pediatric units of a school hospital in s?o paulo. its purpose was to learn the stimulating elements for the development of a child in a hospital environment. besides, it aimed at motivating nursing professionals to adapt the hospital environment to the child. after the analysis of the collected data, categories were organized as: stimulating objects and situations, procedures and inter-relationships. the conclusion is that the nursing team performs an important role as one of the stimulating elements in the hospitalized child care, since they are aware of this role.
