Pelagic and littoral cladocerans (Crustacea, Anomopoda and Ctenopoda) from reservoirs of the Northwest of S?o Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: there are few studies on the zooplankton from the northwestern region of s?o paulo state, brazil, compared to other regions of the state. cladocerans are a very representative zooplankton group with high species diversity. most of this diversity can be found at littoral zones of lakes and reservoirs, especially those occupied by macrophytes. this study was part of a thematic project fapesp/biota program - the virtual institute of biodiversity (www.biotasp.org.br), and its aim is to catalogue and analyze the distribution of cladoceran species (crustacea, anomopoda and ctenopoda) in pelagic and littoral zones from small reservoirs in the northwest of the s?o paulo state, in dry and rainy seasons. zooplankton samplings were carried out in littoral and pelagic zone of 10 small shallow reservoirs (mean depth: 2.8 m) using a plankton 45 μm mesh net. water physical and chemical parameters were also monitored with a multiparameter horiba u10. ph and dissolved oxygen concentration were lower at rainy than dry seasons, indicating high decomposition rates of organic matter introduced from the rural environment, being the main factor contributing to reservoirs' eutrophication. fifty eight cladocerans species were recorded, with four new occurrences for the s?o paulo state. this high richness contrasts with the high devastation of the northwestern region in the state. during the two seasons, littoral zones presented higher cladoceran richness and diversity than pelagic zone. littoral zones with higher macrophytes diversity also showed higher cladocerans richness and diversity than that with low macrophyte diversity. littoral and pelagic zones comparisons emphasized the importance of studies on different regions of the aquatic environments, confirming the elevated richness in the littoral zone, as reported in previous works. this study revealed also the strong influence of the macrophyte community and the adjacent terrestrial environment, which is occupied by forest or agricultur
Water mite predation on zooplankton of a tropical lake

Abstract: water mite (krendowskia sp.) predation on zooplanktonic species from lake monte alegre (s?o paulo state, brazil) was tested in laboratory experiments. one cladoceran, daphnia gessneri, two copepods, tropocyclops prasinus and thermocyclops decipiens, and chaoborus larvae iii and iv were supplied as prey to adult mites. the cladoceran ceriodaphnia cornuta was used in the experiment with mite nymphs. only d.gessneri was preyed on by mites, at an average rate of 7 ind./mite/day, at 23-24oc. although chaoborus was not eaten by the predator in the experiment, in direct observations older larvae were seen to be seized by several mites, both predators and prey sinking to the bottom of the vessel. adult daphnia was grabbed by its dorsal side, swimming together with the mite. there was an increase in predatory activity two hours after sunset.

Abstract: AIM: Among the planktonic microcrustaceans, copepods Cyclopoida and Calanoida are the most representative groups, being the largest biomass of the plankton community. The aim of this work is to catalogue and analyze the distribution of copepod species (Crustacea, Maxillopoda) in pelagic and littoral zones from small reservoirs in the northwest of the S o Paulo State, in dry and rainy seasons (2007 and 2009). METHODS: Zooplankton samplings were carried out in littoral and pelagic zones of 13 small shallow reservoirs (mean depth: 2.6 m) using vertical hauls and plankton net (45 μm). Water physical and chemical parameters were also monitored with a multiparameter Horiba U10. RESULTS: Eighteen species of copepods were identified, 13 Cyclopoida and 5 Calanoida. There was no statistical difference between the distributions of species from the littoral and pelagic zones and neither between dry and rainy seasons. Three species occurred exclusively in the littoral zone - Eucyclops elegans, Paracyclops chiltoni and Mesocyclops ogunnus. Tropocyclops prasinus and Thermocyclops decipiens were the most frequent species in the studied environments. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that in shallow reservoirs copepods present a homogeneous distribution between the littoral and pelagic zones and Cyclopoida are more diverse than Calanoida. Shallow depths and eutrophic state may be regarded as limiting conditions for the development of Calanoida in these reservoirs. OBJETIVO: Dentre os microcrustáceos planct nicos, os copépodes Cyclopoida e Calanoida s o um dos grupos mais representativos, contribuindo com a maior biomassa para a comunidade planct nica. O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de caracterizar as comunidades de copépodes (Crustacea, Maxillopoda) pelágicos e litoraneos presentes em pequenos reservatórios na regi o noroeste do Estado de S o Paulo, nas esta es seca e chuvosa de 2007 a 2009. MATERIAL E MéTODOS: As amostragens foram realizadas tanto na zona litoranea quanto pelágica de 13 pequenos reservatórios rasos (média de 2,6 m), através de arrastos verticais com rede de plancton (45 μm). Parametros físicos e químicos da água também foram avaliados utilizando-se o aparelho Horiba U10. RESULTADOS: Foram identificadas 18 espécies de copépodes, sendo 13 Cyclopoida e 5 Calanoida. N o houve diferen a estatística entre as distribui es das espécies nas zonas litoraneas e pelágicas bem como entre as esta es. Optimal Pricing with Product Quality Differences and Contractual Penalties

Abstract: There is quite a debate between legal scholars from Civil and Common Law systems on whether contractual penalties should be enforced by courts. In this contribution we look at this question from a different angle by modelling a monopolist trying to find optimal prices when contracts without penalty as well as contracts with penalties are offered simultaneously to a class of buyers who face different levels of loss risks. We find that neither changes in legal indemnities nor in privately stipulated fines alter those prices. Also, seller s profit and consumer surplus are not influenced by such changes. Therefore we conclude that full enforcement of penalty clauses as agreed upon is the best recommendation in order to reap benefits like optimal inter-party risk-allocation.

Public Support for a Ban on Headscarves: A Cross-National Perspective

Abstract: This paper compares a psychological explanation of support for a ban on headscarves in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the Netherlands. This study examines how perceptions of threat posed by Muslims and Islam and the overall attitude towards Muslims explain support for a ban on headscarves. In addition, cross-national comparisons are made to study how these relations are affected by contextual differences. Analyses are based on the 2005 survey on Islamic extremism by the Pew Research Center. Results show that the countries have a large influence on whether someone supports the ban on headscarves, indicating that contextual differences matter. In addition, having a negative attitude towards Muslims makes it more likely to support a ban on headscarves. In general, perceived threat contributes to stronger support, although there are slight differences in effect between the countries. Finally, perceived threat equally influences support for the ban on headscarves among prejudiced and non-prejudiced people.
Field calculations, single-particle tracking, and beam dynamics with space charge in the electron lens for the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator

Abstract: An electron lens is planned for the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator as a nonlinear element for integrable dynamics, as an electron cooler, and as an electron trap to study space-charge compensation in rings. We present the main design principles and constraints for nonlinear integrable optics. A magnetic configuration of the solenoids and of the toroidal section is laid out. Single-particle tracking is used to optimize the electron path. Electron beam dynamics at high intensity is calculated with a particle-in-cell code to estimate current limits, profile distortions, and the effects on the circulating beam. In the conclusions, we summarize the main findings and list directions for further work.
On local convergence of the method of alternating projections

Abstract: The method of alternating projections is a classical tool to solve feasibility problems. Here we prove local convergence of alternating projections between subanalytic sets $A,B$ under a mild regularity hypothesis on one of the sets. We show that the speed of convergence is O$(k^{-\rho})$ for some $\rho\in (0,\infty)$.
