Prognostic factors are possible parameters to be measured at the moment of the diagnosis and may be useful as predictors of patient’s survival. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the survival and prognostic factors of canines with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a medical emergency characterized by intense metabolic alterations and high mortality rate. Epidemiological data (sex, age, breed, and weight), clinical sings, alterations observed during the physical examination as well as complete blood count, basic serum biochemistry (glucose, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, and urea), urinalysis and the treatment performed in 16 canines with ketoacidosis were obtained. Based on the parameters evaluated, azotemia, proteinuria, urinary casts, bacteriuria, leukocyturia, decrease of hemoglobin and urine specific gravity were also considered as negative prognostic factors, associated to patient mortality in patients with DKA

Abstract: Once the anesthetic association of tiletamine and zolazepam(Zoletil 50) was successfully used in the anesthesia of Niletilapias (Oreochromis niloticus) via intravenous, the aim of thisexperiment was to evaluate the use of this association via intramuscular.30 fish separated into 6 treatments with 4 repetitionsand 1 control group were used. The dosages of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40and 60 mg/kg were tested. Even though the anesthetic associationdosages between 10 and 60 mg/kg have caused sedation fromslight to moderate levels after the intramuscular administration, itwas possible to suggest that the use of tiletamine and zolazepamassociation through this via is not proper for bloody and algesicprocedures, once none of those dosages were capable enough toprovoke anesthesia in this species.

Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-09352011000600011
Abstract: a case of fibrosarcoma located at medium portion of the urethra of a female dog which presented pollakiuria, estranguria and hematuria at the beginning of urination was reported. the patient also presented polyuria, polydipsia, emesis and anorexia for two days. the complementary exams lead to the diagnosis of bilateral hydronephrosis, right renal hypoplasy and a mass in the urethra causing a dorsal dilatation at its medium portion. a biopsy was not performed antemortem because the general condition of the patient, which even with the institution of treatment for chronic kidney disease, showed no progress. the retrograde cystourethrography and histopathology examinations were decisive to detect urethral fibrosarcoma. ultrasonography and cytology through traumatic probe were inconclusive, due to the mass location and its exfoliating properties.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to develop a methodology for digital soil mapping at a 1:100,000 scale by applying data mining techniques to preexisting relief descriptors and data from pedological and geological maps. a digital database was created from topographic and thematic maps, and allowed the generation of a digital elevation model (dem) of the dois córregos (sp, brazil) sheet (1:50,000 scale). the slope gradient, slope profile, contour profile, basin contributing area, and diagonal distance to drainage geomorphometric parameters were extracted from the dem. the matrix which associated this georeferred data was analyzed by means of decision trees within the weka machine-learning environment, and a model for soil mapping unit prediction was generated. the overall model accuracy increased from 54 to 61% when soil classes with no chances of being predicted were excluded. the association of data mining techniques with geographical information systems produced digital soil maps feasible to be used in studies requiring less detail than those made with the original reference soil maps.

Abstract: the purpose of this paper was to analyze 37 papers regarding teaching procedures and resources designed for students with special needs presented at anped special education work group, during the 1996-2000 period. these articles represent 17% of the 216 papers presented in the last 15 annual anped meetings. vygotsky social historical perspective served as the theoretical basis for the majority of the studies, especially those concerning education for the deaf. students with intellectual disabilities were the target population of most studies, followed by students with deafness, mainly during the 1996-2000 period; papers about physical, visual and multiple disabilities were less frequent. descriptive studies, focusing on qualitative data, involving both case and ethnographic investigations constitute the majority of the articles. experimental studies included group design as well as single subject designs. the articles were eloquent in both showing the need for teachers to pay more attention to the learning process than to the product of learning and in emphasizing the critical role of mediation. the development process of students with disabilities does not occur in the same way as their typically developing peers. this occurs mainly because of the lack of learning opportunities given to students with special needs, rather than the disabling condition.

Abstract: Nucleus Animalium, v.1, n.1, maio 2009The chronic renal failure is a consequence of a lack of renal diseases, that culminates in loss ofthe kidney excretory and concentrator functions. It’s considered the main renal dog affection and it’s marked for itsprogression, in such a way that independently of the cause, leads to the gradual and irreversible destruction of thenefrons. Much discussion is made on therapies for delaying the disease advance, although the survival of animalswith renal failure does not depend on only the choice of the ideal therapeutics but on the conscious of their ownersand veterinarians in relation to the importance of the early diagnostic, identification of the original renal disease, the nutrition of this patient and clinic – laboratory aspects in its several phases. This article proposes to reviewthe main changes caused by chronic renal failure, marking the principal points on physiopathology, diagnosticmethods, therapeutic and clinic management of the chronic renal patient, in order to retard the disease progression and providing best life quality.
