Between the Barrio and the City: Pathways of Work among Scavenging Families  [PDF]

Abstract: In this article, I will reconstruct, through brief stories, some of the traits that characterize the way of life of families in the El Salvador neighborhood, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, go scavenging everyday in Buenos Aires city. These stories will not only tell us who they are and how they arrived at the El Salvador neighborhood, from where, and in what manner they began to salir con la carreta, but will also permit us to move closer to the day-to-day existence of these families in relationship to their life in the barrio and the activities they engage in, thereby giving us a fuller understanding of family dynamics. In the research that originated this paper, I followed an ethnographical perspective to study and analyze the way of life of those families living from the recyclable waste they recollect in Buenos Aires city.

Abstract: the aim of this research is studying the degree of integrality and gender equity in health care practices among women in the city of buenos aires. detecting needs, significations and health care practices in population, practitioners and programmes. it is an exploratory-descriptive project that uses qualitative methodology in data recollection and analysis. action participant techniques are used to assess obstacles and to collaborate in the building of a more integral model in women's health promotion and care from a gender perspective. it includes an evaluation if whether the programms take in account health needs according to age stage, and a prevention angle towards the following stages. by considering them as a way of enlarging subjects′ capacities to live a healthier life acquiring greater levels of citizenship.

Abstract: this work aims to identify how gender subjetivation process in women with coronary heart disease, can collaborate in understanding women's particular risk in this disease. has a critical point of view related to the explanation of young women less incidence linked to biological factors, expanding the framework to a more comprenhensive point of view. by the same token, this framework considers the health-disease-care process of a person produced by biological, phychological and social determinants. the specific collaboration of this work consists in focusing on the psychosocial approach to the conformation of women gender subjetivation in orden to understand this part of women's own way of getting in risk. taking in account that former studies had understood it as a "masculinization" process of the affected population or an increased of biological risk factors in the cause, more than and increase of women's particular psychosocial risk factors.

Abstract: within the framework of argentinean society, in recent decades, obvious processes of stigmatization have been established that give rise to the production of "others" on the basis of their condition of "border immigrants" (such as paraguayans, chileans and bolivians), who are always prey manipulation. in this essay, i propose to delve into the logic of certain premises and interpretative frameworks drawn from sociology and anthropology, in order to analyze these processes of stigmatization. these theoretical-methodological perspectives enable one to record the personal experience of immigrants, and focus on the "language of resistance" through which these groups dismantle and re-create their stigmatized identities. these reflections are the result of ethnographic material collected between 1999 and 2000 in the city of posadas (misiones, argentina) adjoining the city of encarnación (district of itapúa, paraguay).

Abstract: this article is part of a study considering the growing importance of the international transit of people, knowledge, and practices in the schooling and professional education processes of some social segments. considering the public funds made available by the coordination for the improvement of higher education personnel - capes -, the national council for scientific and technological development - cnpq - and the state of s?o paulo research foundation - fapesp - to support researchers' fellowships abroad, aming to improve research and investments on science and technology on the context of international exchanges, we have dedicated this article to the preliminary description and analysis of the database of fellows funded abroad by these research agencies from 1970 to 2000. the movement of flows based on the quantitative methodology of the correlation of variables draws the trends of international academic exchange programs in the three research institutions and in the different areas of knowledge, and we intend to analyse them taking into account the scientific and technological development policies adopted by brazilian state on the period.

Abstract: the purpose of this study is to discuss the contribution of recent studies for understanding the conditions that make extended learning paths possible in low-income segments. the meticulous analysis of its results and an interview with a student of a highly selective higher education course from this background enables us to raise some issues. the review of some studies on the subject evidencing the central role of the family in extended learning paths also enables us to question some of the meanings commonly assigned to extended learning in low-income segments, such as conformism, suffering, and cultural disruption. the need for further investigation on the role of school, as well as on the existence of other meanings related to school access and the experience of poor students in higher education courses has been made evident.

Abstract: nowadays, communications and new technologies, are contributing to increase the complexity of some concepts tied to the notion of presence, time, existence, speed, the present time, simultaneity, space, place, connection, horizontality, verticality subjectivity, society and culture constitute the producers and the product that are affected, transforming their relations and their bonds. the idea is not to abolish ways to think but to incorporate and to produce new glances in order to capture the present and to appreciate the effects and the impact of communication in the subjectivities.

Abstract: during past decades, immigration turned into a "social problem" for the spanish government, then, some mechanisms to detect, classify and organize such phenomena were required. currently, some professionals are being trained in a way that their expert knowledge makes them a reference. the aim of this article is to analyze the way in which this expert knowledge takes part in the "immigration" identification in some levels of spanish society on the one hand, and reflects about the forms in which some definitions of "culture" are mixed with those of "common sense", on the other hand, building a significant hegemonic framework that limits the social debate about "immigration" and recreates some distinctive frameworks among different social groups.

Abstract: north-american studies on legal mobilization have constructed some analytical synthesis between sociology of law and sociology of collective action, theory and research areas that are traditionally apart.the notion of legal mobilization offers a research agenda still not explored by brazilian social sciences on the use of law and courts as resource and strategy of political action. the article presents, in general terms, the theoretical premises of this approach and its conceptual developments for the empirical reconstruction of a mobilization episode in brazil, the maria da penha law campaign.

Abstract: the literature has discussed the importance of early implementation of augmentative and alternative systems with people with various disabilities. this discussion is related to concerns about language acquisition and development within the various expressive possibilities. researchers advise that starting intervention early through resources and procedures using augmentative and alternative communication does not impede speech acquisition and development. this paper aimed to describe oral expressive abilities during the implementation of augmentative and alternative communication with a student with cerebral palsy. an 11-year-old student with cerebral palsy participated in the augmentative and alternative communication program for two years. twelve sessions were selected during the first year of the intervention. the sessions were filmed and the augmentative and alternative communication resource procedures were transcribed. the categories of analysis were defined as verbal expression; nonverbal expression and verbal and nonverbal expression associated. the results of this study identified that augmentative and alternative communication resources supported the use of verbal expression such as vocalizations, words and unintelligible oral expressions.
