Lay vs. Professional Perspectives: The Sexual and Reproductive Health of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Uganda  [PDF]
Gloria K. Seruwagi
Open Journal of Preventive Medicine (OJPM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojpm.2014.47067
Abstract:

Background/Introduction: Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in sub-Saharan Africa have been the focus of much popular and academic writing and the growing body of evidence cannot be overlooked. Existing research focuses on projections of OVC numbers, interventions, outcomes and descriptions of care arrangements. A lot of information exists on their poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) status—most of it quantitative. The purpose of this paper is to present the voice and perceptions of OVC in regards to their SRH. Methods: This was a mixed-methods qualitative study drawing from phenomenology and it used purposive sampling to recruit 129 participants. Results: OVC perceptions and priorities do not always intersect with those of professionals and this has implications for existing and planned interventions. For example some OVC think favorably about early marriages while others have mechanisms of self-protection again SRH harm although this is not usually acknowledged. Conclusions: OVC demonstrate agency; therefore positioning them at the heart of service planning and delivery is an effective strategy in increasing the uptake and impact of interventions seeking to address their sexual and reproductive health needs.

On the Short-Term Optimisation of a Hydro Basin with Social Constraints  [PDF]
Gloria Hermida, Edgardo D. Castronuovo
Computational Water, Energy, and Environmental Engineering (CWEEE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cweee.2013.21002
Abstract:

In this paper, an optimisation problem for calculating the best energy bids of a set of hydro power plants in a basin is proposed. The model is applied to a real Spanish basin for the short-term (24-hour) planning of the operation. The algorithm considers the ecological flows and social consumptions required for the actual operation. One of the hydro plants is fluent, without direct-control abilities. The results show that the fluent plant can be adequately controlled by using the storage capacities of the other plants. In the simulations, the costs related to the social consumptions are more significant than those due to the ecological requirements. An estimate of the cost of providing water for social uses is performed in the study.

Application of the New Moroccan Family Code in Spain (with a Gender Perspective)  [PDF]
Gloria Esteban de la Rosa
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2013.44019
Abstract:

The application of the Moroccan Family Code by Spanish legal operators is not simple, to the extent that it is not only a question of knowing its contents, but also, behind each of its articles and, relating to the institutions contained in the Code, there is a specific understanding of the world and, more specifically, family relations. The Spanish system of Private International Law is to serve as a “communication channel” between legislations which are beginning to coincide due to the new private international situations taking place in Spain, as a new foreign population begins to settle, in particular when it comes to female Moroccan immigrants. In these cases, Moroccan family law may be applied or considered by the Spanish authorities, favouring thus the recognition of decisions taken in Morocco.

Cultural Diversity, European Public Policy Exception and Family Law of Muslim Countries  [PDF]
Gloria Esteban de la Rosa
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2015.62015
Abstract: The recognition of cultural diversity as a value of the European Union Law is undoubtedly present in the current process of integration, which, in turn, is related to the maintenance of peace. Without prejudice to the treatment given by national regulations (Private International Law systems) of each Member State to the issue of cultural diversity existing in the current European society, it may be mentioned the positioning that has also been taken by the EU legislature of PIL on the treatment of said diversity. Tools used by the Private International Law system both for European Union Member States and for the European Private International Law system itself to give answers to this multiculturalism located in the territory that comprises the European Union Member States are discussed below. In particular, art. 10 of the Council Regulation (EU) no. 1259/2010, of 20 December 2010, implementing enhanced cooperation in the area of the law applicable to divorce and legal separation. This exception (public policy) will be practically operational in general when it comes to the implementation of the national system of an Islamic countries, because it may be considered that there is a difference between men and women in everything related to family relationships. The aim of this paper is to analyze the possibility of the “recognition method” as a clause for the interpretation of Private International Law to permit the application of foreign Muslim Law by European authorities in family cases and to avoid limping relationships.
La propiedad de Ramon Urquiola, desde su constitución hasta el fraccionamiento en la provincia de Buenos Aires, entre los siglos XIX y XX
Cucullu,Gloria;
Mundo agrario , 2009,
Abstract: this research is focused on the following topics: the process of acquiring a large tract of land in lobos, buenos aires, in the early nineteenth century, the social and economic integration of the acquirer and the social and political life of their sons: the changing cultural form and land use through two generations, the social and cultural change as represented by owners who continue to occur due to fractionation hereditary succession, the sales process that leads to total alienation of land in little more than a century, the discussion of the factors leading to this outcome.
Diagnóstico de dificultades de la evaluación del aprendizaje en la universidad: un caso particular en Chile
Contreras,Gloria;
Educación y Educadores , 2010,
Abstract: the general features of learning assessment at the university level are associated with a traditional concept of individualistic assessment focused on the memorization of contents, primarily for the purpose of grading. the situation at the pontificia universidad católica de valparaíso (chile) prompted a diagnosis of how teachers in different faculties assess student learning. this was done with questionnaires for students and teachers alike, and through educational workshops. among the most important conclusions, it was found that teachers were able to identify clearly the technical features of the procedures that make assessments valid and reliable. in terms of evaluation criteria, one of the main difficulties they faced was explaining the kind of quality they expected students to show in their work. there was consensus on two processes teachers regard as highly important: feedback and self-evaluation/co-assessment. however, those processes have not been implemented owing to lack of knowledge about the appropriate strategies.
MODELO DE COMUNICACIóN NO VERBAL EN DEPORTE Y BALLET
Vallejo,Gloria;
Forma y Función , 2010,
Abstract: this study analyzes the communication model generated among professional soccer trainers, artistic gymnastics trainers, and folkloric ballet instructors, on the basis of the dynamic body language typical of specialized communication among sportspeople and dancers, which includes a high percentage of non-verbal language. non-verbal language was observed in both psychomotor and sociomotor practices in order to identify and characterize relations between different concepts and their corresponding gestural representation. this made it possible to generate a communication model that takes into account the non-verbal aspects of specialized communicative contexts. the results indicate that the non-verbal language of trainers and instructors occasionally replaces verbal language when the latter is insufficient or inappropriate to describe an action or movement of great precision, due to circumstances of distance or acoustic interferences. with regard to ballet instructors, it was found that there was a generalized form of guiding rehearsals, through the use of rhythmic counts with hands or feet. in addition, the paralinguistic components of the different speech acts are emphasized, especially concerning intonation, duration and intensity.
La corrección del error en clases de inglés como lengua extranjera
Balcarcel,Gloria;
Letras , 2006,
Abstract: this article presents an observational study on corrective feedback and learner uptake patterns in english as foreign language (efl) classrooms. this study examines types and frequency of feedback used by non-native english instructors and their relationship to learner uptake. twelve teachers with their intact classes from different undergraduate programs participated in the study. the database consists of 16 hours of classroom interaction taken from general efl lessons. the data was audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded according to lyster and ranta?s categories (1997). the findings indicate that recasts are the preferred implicit type of feedback. other explicit feedback types such as elicitation and repetition are frequent. the feedback types that lead more successfully to student generated repair were recast, elicitation, and repetition.
Mechanisms Mediating Antigenic Variation in Trypanosoma brucei
Rudenko, Gloria;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761999000200021
Abstract: antigenic variation in trypanosoma brucei is a highly sophisticated survival strategy involving switching between the transcription of one of an estimated thousand variant surface glycoprotein (vsg) genes. switching involves either transcriptional control, resulting in switching between different vsg expression sites; or dna rearrangement events slotting previously inactive vsg genes into an active vsg expression site. in recent years, considerable progress has been made in techniques allowing us to genetically modify infective bloodstream form trypanosomes. this is allowing us to reengineer vsg expression sites, and look at the effect on the mechanisms subsequently used for antigenic variation. we can now begin a dissection of a highly complicated survival strategy mediated by many different mechanisms operating simultaneously.
Representaciones culturales acerca de la anemia y la suplementación con hierro
Sammartino,Gloria;
Archivos argentinos de pediatr?-a , 2010,
Abstract: background. in argentina, one third of pregnant women and infants suffer from anemia. however, the adherence to the treatment is very low. this study, that is qualitative in nature, tries to show the social representations regarding notions of anemia and the acceptance and reject of iron supplementation among health teams, mothers and pregnant women. population and methods. semi-structured and open interviews were applied to professionals and non professionals that worked in health centers, as well as mothers of small children and pregnant users. the 8 health centres that were visited are placed in the city of buenos aires and great buenos aires, the provinces of jujuy and misiones. information gathering took place between june 2007 and march 2008; 49 members of health teams and 40 mothers were interviewed. data analysis was made with the software nud*ist. results. the opposing attitudes of the professionals were emphasized. there was a group that did not visualize the anemia problem and that did not consider iron supplementation as necessary, there was another group that, even when considering it as problematic, found that the intake of food was the solution. finally, there was a third group that had absolutely incorporated fighting and preventing the anemia, for whom iron supplementation had an important place. conclusions. to follow-up the regulation for iron supplementation depends on the beliefs and the private wishes of health teams members.
