On the global convergence of interior-point nonlinear programming algorithms

Abstract: carathéodory's lemma states that if we have a linear combination of vectors in n, we can rewrite this combination using a linearly independent subset. this lemma has been successfully applied in nonlinear optimization in many contexts. in this work we present a new version of this celebrated result, in which we obtained new bounds for the size of the coefficients in the linear combination and we provide examples where these bounds are useful. we show how these new bounds can be used to prove that the internal penalty method converges to kkt points, and we prove that the hypothesis to obtain this result cannot be weakened.the new bounds also provides us some new results of convergence for the quasi feasible interior point ?2-penalty method of chen and goldfarb [7]. mathematical subject classification: 90c30, 49k99, 65k05.
Stem cell grafts as therapeutic tools for central nervous system disorders

Abstract: the last few years have seen a growing interest in stem cell research. the media has helped to keep attention to the subject making it as popular as therapeutic cloning. a number of studies highlighted the importance of stem cells as prospective therapy for neurodegenerative conditions. the possibility of successful treatment for such pathologies using stem cells has raised enormous hope. whilst in some countries biotechnologists have realised the commercial potential of the field, human stem cell research and its clinical applications have constantly been subject of ethical and legal debate. the present review brings an overview of recent aspects of stem cell research for central nervous system disorders, with special attention to parkinson's and alzheimer's diseases, cerebral ischemic insult and spinal cord injury. furthermore, the ethical implications regarding the use of embryonic stem cells as a fundamentally more promising cell type are discussed.

Abstract: Este artigo tem o objetivo de discutir a rela o existente entre a autonomia individual e coletiva e a promo o da saúde. Assim, apresenta uma revis o bibliográfica sobre o percurso conceitual da promo o da saúde desde a perspectiva da Carta de Ottawa, destacando os momentos desse percurso onde é possível encontrar a amplia o da autonomia como um norte para as a es de promo o da saúde. Destaca a importancia de as estratégias de promo o da saúde no Brasil priorizarem políticas públicas voltadas para a diminui o das iniquidades sociais, evidenciadas nas desigualdades em saúde, visando a ampliar a autonomia individual e coletiva. This paper aims to discuss the relation between individual and collective autonomy and health promotion. In order to do so, it reviews the literature on the conceptual course of health promotion since the Ottawa Charter, emphasizing the amplification of autonomy as a guide for health promotion actions. It also highlights the importance of health promotion strategies in Brazil, which prioritize public policies in order to decrease social inequalities. In particular, Brazilian policies are addressed towards increasing individual and collective autonomy.
Detec??o de atividade lectínica e atividade hemolítica em extratos de esponjas (Porifera) nativas da costa atlantica do Brasil

Abstract: aqueous extracts of twenty species of sea sponges of the brazilian atlantic coast were tested with the aim of searching the presence of lectinic and hemolytic activity. hemagglutinating activity for human erythrocytes and for distinct animals were found in 12 of the 20 tested extracts. the extracts of axinella corrugata, chondrilla nucula, chondrosia collectrix, cinachyrella alloclada and guitarra sp1. were the ones that presented highest hemagglutinating activity. ten of the 12 hemagglutinating extracts had the activity inhibited by one or more sugars or glycoproteins. the lectin from chondrilla nucula was resistant to thermal denaturation when heated up to 100 oc for 60 minutes. hemolytic activity was only found in the extracts from petromica citrina and acervochalina sp. the species of sea sponges that showed major potential for futures studies of their lectins were axinella corrugata, chondrilla nucula and chondrosia collectrix, due to the highest hemagglutinating activity presented by their extracts, allied to the highest specific activity.
