A pathological o-minimal quotient

Abstract: We give an example of a definable quotient in an o-minimal structure which cannot be eliminated over any set of parameters, giving a negative answer to a question of Eleftheriou, Peterzil, and Ramakrishnan. Equivalently, there is an o-minimal structure M whose elementary diagram does not eliminate imaginaries. We also give a positive answer to a related question, showing that any imaginary in an o-minimal structure is interdefinable over an independent set of parameters with a tuple of real elements. This can be interpreted as saying that interpretable sets look "locally" like definable sets, in a sense which can be made precise.
Circular Planar Resistor Networks with Nonlinear and Signed Conductors

Abstract: We consider the inverse boundary value problem in the case of discrete electrical networks containing nonlinear (non-ohmic) resistors. Generalizing work of Curtis, Ingerman, Morrow, Colin de Verdiere, Gitler, and Vertigan, we characterize the circular planar graphs for which the inverse boundary value problem has a solution in this generalized non-linear setting. The answer is the same as in the linear setting. Our method of proof never requires that the resistors behave in a continuous or monotone fashion; this allows us to recover signed conductances in many cases. We apply this to the problem of recovery in graphs that are not circular planar. We also use our results to make a frivolous knot-theoretic statement, and to slightly generalize a fact proved by Lam and Pylyavskyy about factorization schemes in their electrical linear group.
On the proof of elimination of imaginaries in algebraically closed valued fields

Abstract: We give a simplified proof of elimination of imaginaries (in the geometric sorts) in ACVF, based on ideas of Hrushovski. This proof manages to avoid many of the technical issues which arose in the original proof by Haskell, Hrushovski, and Macpherson.
On dp-minimal fields

Abstract: We classify dp-minimal pure fields up to elementary equivalence. Most are equivalent to Hahn series fields $K((t^\Gamma))$ where $\Gamma$ satisfies some divisibility conditions and $K$ is $\mathbb{F}_p^{alg}$ or a local field of characteristic zero. We show that dp-small fields (including VC-minimal fields) are algebraically closed or real closed.
Combinatorial Game Theory, Well-Tempered Scoring Games, and a Knot Game

Abstract: We begin by reviewing and proving the basic facts of combinatorial game theory. We then consider scoring games (also known as Milnor games or positional games), focusing on the "fixed-length" games for which all sequences of play terminate after the same number of moves. The theory of fixed-length scoring games is shown to have properties similar to the theory of loopy combinatorial games, with operations similar to onsides and offsides. We give a complete description of the structure of fixed-length scoring games in terms of the class of short partizan games. We also consider fixed-length scoring games taking values in the two-element boolean algebra, and classify these games up to indistinguishability. We then apply these results to analyze some positions in the knotting-unknotting game of Pechenik, Townsend, Henrich, MacNaughton, and Silversmith.
The Combinatorial Game Theory of Well-Tempered Scoring Games

Abstract: We consider the class of "well-tempered" integer-valued scoring games, which have the property that the parity of the length of the game is independent of the line of play. We consider disjunctive sums of these games, and develop a theory for them analogous to the standard theory of disjunctive sums of normal-play partizan games. We show that the monoid of well-tempered scoring games modulo indistinguishability is cancellative but not a group, and we describe its structure in terms of the group of normal-play partizan games. We also classify Boolean-valued well-tempered scoring games, showing that there are exactly seventy, up to equivalence.

Abstract: Edit distance measures the similarity between two strings (as the minimum number of change, insert or delete operations that transform one string to the other). An edit sequence s is a sequence of such operations and can be used to represent the string resulting from applying s to a reference string. We present a modification to Ukkonen’s edit distance calculating algorithm based upon representing strings by edit sequences. We conclude with a demonstration of how using this representation can improve mitochondrial DNA query throughput performance in a distributed computing environment.

Abstract:

The recent release by Criterion on DVD of Paul Schrader’s film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters(1985) and Mishima’s own film Patriotism(1965) has caused the author of this essay to reconsider his relationship with the late Japanese writers’ books and literary legacy. Believing that these fine films’ presence on DVD will stimulate much renewed discussion of Mishima both in the US and Japan, the author recalls his first discovery of Mishima’s existence shortly after his famous suicide in 1970, reading and responding to his literary output, and prodding famous authors such as Tennessee Williams and Cormac McCarthy for their thoughts on Mishima’s influence. The author’s two poems about Mishima are included to illustrate his changing inner perceptions of the internationally famous writer and the (now-fading) adverse reaction to his work in Japan caused by his politics and his virtually public suicide.

Abstract: In response to Kenya's goal of free and universal primary education for every child by 2015, this paper describes a few of the obstacles that one of the most visible periphery populations in Kenya, orphaned children, face in attempting to reach this objective. The most frequently cited barriers of children and their caretakers to consistent school attendance included: inability to pay school fees, lack of a school uniform, difficulty in providing assis- tance to orphaned children, presence of disease/illness in the family and disruption of education due to political violence. Conducted in a Kikuyu community in the Kinangop District of Central Kenya following the 2007/2008 presidential election riots, this study utilized multiple regression, logistic regression and MANOVA statistical tests to determine if families caring for orphaned children of primary school age differed significantly from families with no orphans in the home. Discriminant function and Mahalanobis testing further revealed differ- ences in types of households, with the presence of orphans in the home (particularly AIDS orphans) significantly increasing the amount of school fees owed per family. Qualitative data obtained from semi-structured interviews with families and open-ended interviews with their primary school aged children contextualized study results and inform policy recommendations.

Abstract: Selection bias is an educational and a social malady which is of concern to every educator especially educational administrator when allocating educational opportunities to learners based on previous performance. Bias in predicting who passes or who fails and hence in selection exists if the same prediction equation is used for different groups, for example, for both gender when in fact such prediction, given the tests involved, is different for male and female learners. As a check for this, there is always the need to perform differential prediction for the sexes. The purpose for this descriptive study is to investigate gender as a factor in the prediction of performance in BGCSE physical examination by coursework and forecast grades among secondary school students in Botswana. The sample composed of 2292 (1432 males and 860 females) students who, based on Botswana Examination Council (BEC) records, obtained grades in coursework, forecast and BGCSE physical education grades for 2005 through 2008. The Pearson correlation and regression analyses done using SPSS revealed that though coursework and forecast grades significantly predict the BGCSE grades in physical education among senior secondary school students in Botswana, based on each year’s data, gender does not influence such prediction significantly, but for cumulative data across all the years it does.
