Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder: Proteins Can Recognize Binding Sites of Homologous Proteins in More than One Way

Abstract: Understanding the mechanisms of protein–protein interaction is a fundamental problem with many practical applications. The fact that different proteins can bind similar partners suggests that convergently evolved binding interfaces are reused in different complexes. A set of protein complexes composed of non-homologous domains interacting with homologous partners at equivalent binding sites was collected in 2006, offering an opportunity to investigate this point. We considered 433 pairs of protein–protein complexes from the ABAC database (AB and AC binary protein complexes sharing a homologous partner A) and analyzed the extent of physico-chemical similarity at the atomic and residue level at the protein–protein interface. Homologous partners of the complexes were superimposed using Multiprot, and similar atoms at the interface were quantified using a five class grouping scheme and a distance cut-off. We found that the number of interfacial atoms with similar properties is systematically lower in the non-homologous proteins than in the homologous ones. We assessed the significance of the similarity by bootstrapping the atomic properties at the interfaces. We found that the similarity of binding sites is very significant between homologous proteins, as expected, but generally insignificant between the non-homologous proteins that bind to homologous partners. Furthermore, evolutionarily conserved residues are not colocalized within the binding sites of non-homologous proteins. We could only identify a limited number of cases of structural mimicry at the interface, suggesting that this property is less generic than previously thought. Our results support the hypothesis that different proteins can interact with similar partners using alternate strategies, but do not support convergent evolution.

Abstract: this paper analyzes the effect of anti-usury laws on the yucatan mortgage market during the nineteenth century henequen boom. we show that the reform laws that ended the restrictions on interest rates in mexico transformed the legal credit market and initiated a new phase in mexico's financial history. before the creation of banks in mexico, private mortgages recorded by notaries were one of the few formal long-term debt instruments in the country. this paper uses these notarial sources to demonstrate the effects of a specific law decreed by president benito juarez in 1861 on the yucatan mortgage market, as well as the role that notaries played in private credit transactions. this analysis is based on approximately one thousand mortgage contracts recorded between 1850 and 1900 collected in the general archive of the state of yucatan.

Abstract: Cet article analyse le fonctionnement et les enjeux ontologiques et esthétiques d’un procédé narratologique propre à Gao Xingjian, le flux de langue , reposant sur un dédoublement de la voix narrative en deux pronoms Je et Tu dans son récit autofictionnel, La Montagne de l’ me. Il vise à démontrer que l’utilisation de la seconde personne contribue à placer la narration dans un espace ambivalent, répondant à l’appel de deux postures, celles de Narcisse et d’écho. D’un c té, le Tu renvoyant au Je son reflet déformé et diffracté, creuse la solitude et exhibe la scission du sujet. De l’autre, il est écho faisant résonner la parole de l’Autre, réconciliant le moi avec une identité retrouvée et une possible altérité. This article analyses the mechanisms and the ontological and esthetical implications of a narrative approach specific to Gao Xingjian in his autofictionnal storytelling Soul Moutain, the “stream of language”, which is based on splitting the narrative voice in two pronouns “I” and “You”. This aims at demonstrating that the use of the second-person pronoun contributes to locate the narrative in an ambivalent space, responding to two viewpoints, those of Narcissus and Echo. On the one hand, the “You” reflecting to the “I” his distorted image, exacerbates the loneliness and highlights the self-divide of the subject. On the other hand, Echo replicates the words of the Other, reuniting the subject with his identity and the possibility of otherness. Este artículo analiza el funcionamiento y las apuestas ontológicas y estéticas de un procedimiento narratológico propio a Gao Xingjian, el “flujo de lengua”, el cual reposa en un desdoblamiento de la voz narrativa en los pronombres "yo" y "tú" dentro del relato autofictional La Monta a del Alma. También pretende demostrar que el uso de la segunda persona permite situar la narración en un espacio ambivalente, recordando las posturas de los personajes mitológicos de Narciso y de Eco. Por un lado, el “tú” devuelve al "yo" su reflejo deformado y difractado, refuerza la soledad y exhibe la escisión del sujeto. Por el otro, es Eco el que hace resonar la palabra del Otro, reconciliando el yo con una identidad recobrada) y una posible alteridad.
Faux et usage de faux. Sur le bilinguisme chinois de René Leys

Abstract: Cet article a pour objectif de démontrer que le bilinguisme franco-chinois de René Leys, contrepoint burlesque à l’hiératisme orchestrédans Stèles, joue du faux et de la contrefa on. L’étude se construit autour de la dualité et de la duplicité de la traduction, reflétée par les deux caractères inauguraux du roman : Da Nei. Dépliant à un lecteur non sinisant l’ infra chinois du texte, l’article a à c ur de montrer ses pièges et ses leurres et d’analyser comment le recours au bilinguisme vient ici aider à désorienter, dans un jeu parodique, le romanesque occidental. This article aims to prove that the process of bilingualism used in Segalen’s novel, René Leys, is a burlesque counterpoint to the French-Chinese language in Stèles, Segalen’s collection of poems. The bilingualism in the novel is based on the singular game of forgery and counterfeiting. Starting from the equivocal meaning of the two Chinese characters, Da Nei, opening the book, this study analyses the duality and double dealing of the translation. This article seeks to explain to a non-Chinese-speaking audience the “infra” language created by the use of Chinese in the text, and reveals the snares and the deliberately placed linguistic games. In the end, this article attempts to convey understanding of how this elaborate style of the East is also a way for the author to offer commentary, through parody, on the position of the novel in the West. Este artículo pretende demostrar que el bilingüismo sino-francés de René Leys, contrapunto burlesco al hieratismo orquestado en Stèles, se vale de lo ilusorio y de la falsificación. El estudio está construido a partir de la dualidad y la duplicidad de la traducción, reflejada por los caracteres iniciales de la novela : Da Nei. Develando a un lector no sinófilo lo “infra” chino del texto, el artículo se esfuerza en mostrar las trampas y sus anzuelos presentes, y en analizar cómo el recurso del bilingüismo sirve aquí para desorientar, en un juego paródico, lo novelesco occidental.

A purpose-driven university museum

Abstract: University museums expend much energy dividing their time, staff, and resources serving the needs of both the academic institution and the surrounding community. Not only does this often duplicate efforts, but can lead to either faculty and student disenfranchisement if the museum focuses more effort outward or to jeopardizing precious town/gown relations if the focus is too much inward. Through careful consideration of mission, implementing strategic planning that involves all stakeholders, and evaluating the impact of the mission on its audiences, the university museum can transform itself into a purposeful museum and address this audience conundrum. This paper will present the Hood Museum of Art’s two-year initiative to demonstrate that through realigning its purpose and practices towards cultivating teaching and creating meaningful learning encounters, the museum, the university, and the community benefit equally.

Abstract: En este artículo se analiza el efecto del fin del mutuo usurario en los mercados de crédito tomando como ejemplo el desarrollo del mercado de crédito hipotecario en Yucatán durante el auge henequenero del siglo XIX. Demuestra que las Leyes de Reforma que acabaron con las restricciones sobre las tasas de interés en México transformaron el mercado de crédito legal e iniciaron una nueva época en la historia financiera del país. Antes de la creación de los bancos en México, las obligaciones hipotecarias privadas protocolizadas por notarios eran una de las pocas fuentes de crédito formales en el país. Mediante estas actas notariales, se observa el efecto del decreto juarista de 1861 sobre el mercado hipotecario de Yucatán y el papel central que desempe aba el notario en las transacciones privadas de crédito a largo plazo. Este análisis se apoya en aproximadamente 1 000 actas hipotecarias protocolizadas entre 1850 y 1900, salvaguardadas en el Archivo General del Estado de Yucatán. Abstract: Recouvrant une vaste palette de pratiques, les mobilités thérapeutiques peuvent être précisées selon des sous-catégories basées sur différents croisements entre déterminants migratoires et déterminants de l’accès aux soins. Cet article propose une catégorie duelle, les migrations/circulations thérapeutiques , construite à partir d’une ethnographie de la quête de soins biomédicaux dans la population comorienne vivant en Union des Comores. Il vise à mettre en perspective un axe Sud-Nord sur lequel les personnes migrent à défaut d’aller et venir (Comores-Mayotte), et un autre Sud-Sud le long duquel elles peuvent circuler librement (Comores-Tanzanie). D'autre part, cet article souligne des spécificités contemporaines de l'expérience de maladie et de migration dans un pays en voie de développement. Therapeutic mobilities cover a wide variety of practices and can be divided according to sub categories based on migratory and therapeutic determinants. This article offers to explore a binary category, that of therapeutic migration and therapeutic circulation, based on an ethnographic study of native Comorians’ itineraries to access biomedical care. The objective is to compare two geographical axes: the South-North axis upon which people migrate instead of circulating to and fro (Comoros-Mayot), the South-South axis upon which people can circulate freely (Comoros-Tanzania). Moreover, this article underlines contemporary specificities of illness and migration experiences, in a developping country.

Abstract: This paper overviews women artists’ contribution to early Australian art historiography, especially focusing on the period 1900-1945, but extending to considering the diverse and changing status of women artists and the evaluation of women’s art in public culture from the postwar period up to the early twenty-first century. Two particular lines of enquiry are emphasised concurrently: an overview of feminist and consciously interventionist art historical/theoretical gestures, but equally women’s contribution to disseminating an understanding of art historical narratives in Australia, prior to the establishment of the Herald Chair of Fine Arts at University of Melbourne. These accounts are drawn from primary sources that substantially have not been consolidated or compared before in an academic context and reveal a widespread practice of public lectures and radio broadcasts across Eastern Australia around art historical themes particularly in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as back to the Federation period.
