Vreugde en verdriet in die huis van Jakob

HTS Theological Studies/Teologiese Studies , 2008,
Abstract: Happiness and lament in the house of Jacob: The birth narrative in Genesis 29:31-30:24 is a coherent mini drama in its own right, although it is embedded in the patriarchal narratives and as such furnishes important background to the unfolding drama in Jacob\'s house. In this narrative, the reader is invited right into the intricate family relations of a dysfunctional polygamous marriage, where two rivals communicate with each other and their mutual husband by means of the names given at birth to their children and the children of their slave girls. This article focuses on the quest for happiness, which is evident in the births and name-giving in the house of Jacob. Although true happiness remains elusive, at the end both women receive their dues. God keeps a balance between the two contenders, but the birth of Rachel's son calls for a resolution still to come. The text is thus left open ended. HTS Theological Studies Vol. 64 (2) 2008: pp. 935-957

Bolivian Studies Journal , 2012, DOI: 10.5195/bsj.2011.44
Abstract: This work approaches the complex relation between North American institutions dedicated to the production of knowledge on Bolivia and its homologous Bolivians, emphasizing the fact that nowadays in Bolivia not only an immense intellectual wealth totally established exists, but also a field of emergent knowledge whose reflections and challenges deserve a diffusion in the north. To authorize in the north the theoretical potecial of the debates generated in Bolivia would make the knowledge produced on Bolivia a lot more dynamic and responsible. Inversely, I will also discuss the importance to initiate in Bolivia studies that will lead to understand the complexity of the institutions and societies of the north, that are not neither homogenous nor static, less still automatically reproductive of imperialism. Protected Areas and Human Displacement: Improving the Interface between Policy and Practice
Krueger Linda
Conservation & Society , 2009,
Abstract: Despite a growing and increasingly sophisticated set of international policy guidance and norms governing issues of equity and the rights of indigenous and local people, conservationists continue to face moral and practical dilemmas in the application of these guidelines in the field, especially in cases where conservationists seek to restrict access to natural resources. One source of the dilemma is that successful implementation of international covenants may require a stronger enabling environment (in the form of fairness, legitimacy of political actors, transparency and accountability) than typically exists on the ground. Conservationists also need to be better informed about existing best practice on community participation. However, both policy and practice can be ultimately strengthened by an iterative process in which practitioners provide regular input to policy development in order to improve the normative basis for successful conservation.
Affordances and the musically extended mind
Joel Krueger
Frontiers in Psychology , 2014, DOI: 10.3389/fpsyg.2013.01003
Abstract: I defend a model of the musically extended mind. I consider how acts of “musicking” grant access to novel emotional experiences otherwise inaccessible. First, I discuss the idea of “musical affordances” and specify both what musical affordances are and how they invite different forms of entrainment. Next, I argue that musical affordances – via soliciting different forms of entrainment – enhance the functionality of various endogenous, emotion-granting regulative processes, drawing novel experiences out of us with an expanded complexity and phenomenal character. I argue that music therefore ought to be thought of as part of the vehicle needed to realize these emotional experiences. I appeal to different sources of empirical work to develop this idea.
Standard Model Fits

Abstract: Recent results of tests of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions are presented. Data are used from the four LEP experiments, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3, OPAL, the SLD experiment at SLC, the TEVATRON p-pbar experiments CDF and D0 and the NuTeV neutrino experiment. chi2-fits are performed in order to study the consistency of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions.
openDaVE - a data visualisation and transformation framework
Jens Krueger
Physics , 2002,
Abstract: At present each neutron scattering facility has its own set of data treatment software, normally based on a proprietary data format. The travelling scientist is either forced to continually learn new software or to write conversion routines for his own software tools. During software development most of the time is spent on routines connected with file input and output or visualisation. Our aim is to relieve the scientist from such tedious work to allow maximum effort to be spent on data processing routines. I present an "Open Source" component based, extendable, platform independent framework for visualisation and transformation of data. Most of the existing software appears as a monolithic block. In contrast openDaVE is built up in a modular design. It consists of three parts: the kernel, a lot of modules, and some different front-ends. The actual functionality of the framework is done by the modules. The kernel provides the creation, the destruction of the modules, and the interaction between them, whereas the front-end interacts with the user. The modules are divided in three classes: sources, filters, and sinks. Each of the module consists of two different parts: the module logic, and one or more interfaces, which set the module parameters. The interfaces are front-end specific.
Autotools for writing portable software
Jens Krueger
Physics , 2002,
Abstract: Most of the scientific software is developed in the same manner: It starts at a lab and the scientist says "This part of software is only for my private use". But the software grows and grows, and it comes the time, that other scientists want to use it, too. If they are not working in the same lab and on the same machine, it leads to the problem how to install this software on the new machine. Sometimes it is relatively easy to adopt the makefile to the new conditions (compiler, linker, libraries), if it is well written. But mostly it is not done by changing some pathes. One has to change the compiler, linker, additional or standard libraries, and so on. I want to show how you avoid a lot of trouble, if you write software, which may be used on different plattforms.
2D Detectors for Particle Physics and for Imaging Applications
Hans Krueger
Physics , 2005, DOI: 10.1016/j.nima.2005.07.037
Abstract: The demands on detectors for particle detection as well as for medical and astronomical X-ray imaging are continuously pushing the development of novel pixel detectors. The state of the art in pixel detector technology to date are hybrid pixel detectors in which sensor and read-out integrated circuits are processed on different substrates and connected via high density interconnect structures. While these detectors are technologically mastered such that large scale particle detectors can be and are being built, the demands for improved performance for the next generation particle detectors ask for the development of monolithic or semi-monolithic approaches. Given the fact that the demands for medical imaging are different in some key aspects, developments for these applications, which started as particle physics spin-off, are becomming rather independent. New approaches are leading to novel signal processing concepts and interconnect technologies to satisfy the need for very high dynamic range and large area detectors. The present state in hybrid and (semi-)monolithic pixel detector development and their different approaches for particle physics and imaging application is reviewed.
