Argentina, la región, Entre Ríos: pasado, presente y proyección
Lenardón,Fernando;
Enfoques , 2010,
Abstract: in argentina, upon the richness of the soil stands a weak industrial structure, an infrastructure which is not solid, neglected human resources and a great portion of the population in poverty. in the face of this situation, a limiting factor is the corruption deep rooted in the society, especially among leaders both public and private. but the more serious problem is that the population is observing this situation with acceptance and indifference. to revert this situation, proposals are needed to improve life conditions and the competitively of the productive system, all included in a framework of indispensible ethics.
Marguerite Yourcenar and the mythological dimension of the historical novel Marguerite Yourcenar and the mythological dimension of the historical novel
Andrietta Lenard
Ilha do Desterro , 2008,
Abstract: Century after century, the words uttered in the ast have been echoed in the present. It is the epic That mediates between past and present days. It is the poet who succeeds in carrying the ardor of past ages through to this generation. For him, History is an attempt to explain a genealogy. In the intellectual scenery of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the memory of the past is expressed as a mythical absorption. One wishes to meet the primeval facts which determined the evolution of the different societies — as well as the individual's role in this development. That explains why in the Greek mythology the goddess Mnemosene is the mother of the Muses. It is by her evocation that the poet gives shape and beauty to the "gests", being at the same time a messenger, who makes manifest to mankind the secret of its origin. A rela??o entre "moderniza??o" neoliberal e práticas políticas "atrasadas" no Brasil dos anos 1990
Lenard?o, Elsio;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782008000200014
Abstract: our goal is to investigate the reasons behind the presence of clientelist-type practices among the popular classes in brazil, highlighting the decade of the 1990s. our proposal gives salience to factors regarding the phenomenon's socio-political conjuncture, thereby taking us beyond explanations that rely exclusively on historical-cultural aspects or that sustain an economic bias. we use bibliographic and journalistic sources, from which we develop our own interpretation of the period. thus, we observe that clientelist practices are encouraged to manifest themselves at the level of national political organization - particularly within the federal sphere - yet are also reflected at state and municipal levels, due to the coalition of political forces created through the implantation of a neoliberal project in brazil. the latter has joined "modern" brazilian social democracy and "old" regional oligarchies situated primarily within the pfl, pp, ptb and certain sectors of the pmdb, whose representatives are known for their attachment to patrimonialist and paternalistic practices. the inclusion of the latter in the "conservative pact" that has promoted neo-liberal political reform has thus meant awarding new value to such practices. herein lies partial explanation for the vigor with which practices such as "fisiologismo", "apadrinhamento", abuse of state machinery, buying and selling of votes and clientelism have manifested themselves on the national scene over the course of the 1990s.
JAVA Implementation of the Batched iLab Shared Architecture
Lenard Payne,Mark Schulz
International Journal of Online Engineering (iJOE) , 2013, DOI: 10.3991/ijoe.v9is3.2531
Abstract: The MIT iLab Shared Architecture is limited currently to running on the Microsoft Windows platform. A JAVA implementation of the Batched iLab Shared Architecture has been developed that can be used on other operating systems and still interoperate with the existing Microsoft .NET web services of MIT’s iLab ServiceBroker. The Batched iLab Shared Architecture has been revised and separates the Labserver into a LabServer that handles experiment management and a LabEquipment that handles experiment execution. The JAVA implementation provides a 3-tier code development model that allows code to be reused and to develop only the code that is specific to each experiment.
An Examination of Library Anxiety at Cape Breton University
Lenard J. Lawless
Evidence Based Library and Information Practice , 2011,
Abstract: Objective – Library anxiety as a phenomenon has been discussed for decades. While it is generally recognized, seeing its effects within a specific institution can often be difficult. This study examined the presence and degree of library anxiety among students at Cape Breton University in Canada. Methods – A modified version of the Library Anxiety Scale (LAS) was provided to the students via an online survey. Invitations to take the survey were sent to students by email and via the Student Union’s social networking site. Results – The average score on the LAS showed only mild anxiety levels among all the respondents. When categorizing the results by either program of study or program year, the results vary from no to mild anxiety. Little variation was seen between the sexes, with both males and females scoring close to the overall average of mild anxiety. Conclusions – With no segments of the student body scoring in the moderate to severe levels, the overall LAS scores for Cape Breton University’s students appear to be in a range that could be considered “normal.”
Remarks on the statistical aspects of the safety analysis
Lenard Pal,Mihaly Makai
Physics , 2013,
Abstract: We investigate the statistical methods applied throughout safety analysis of complex systems. The tolerance interval method implemented in the widely utilized 0.95|0.95 methodology is analyzed. We point out a remarkable weakness of the tolerance interval method concerning the principle of repeatability. It is proved that repeating twice the procedure, the probability that the second maximum will be larger/smaller than the first one is 50\%. This statement is not surprising, it holds for any random variable with continuous distribution function. In order to demonstrate the undesirable consequences of the tolerance interval method in the decision making, the results of the analysis of an elementary example are discussed. Instead of the tolerance interval method, we suggest another method based on the sign test which has more encouraging features, especially in the case of several output variables. The problematic aspects of the method are also discussed. Finally, we suggest a simple test case which is able to reveal if the tolerance interval method would not be capable of determining the risky states of the system, when there are only a few of them. If there are many, then the method may not explore each one in the analysis.
Do Earnings Management and Audit Quality Influence Over-Investment by Chinese Companies?
Mary Jane Lenard,Bing Yu
International Journal of Economics and Finance , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/ijef.v4n2p21
Abstract: This paper examines how earnings quality affects the investment decisions of Chinese companies who employ non-Big 4 auditors. We measure earnings quality through the companies’ use of discretionary accruals to manage earnings, and by the quality of the companies’ auditors. We then seek to determine whether the quality of the earnings and the quality of the audit relate to overconfidence in internal decision making and lead to excess investment. We use two models for our study, adapted from the model used by McNichols and Stubben (2008). The first model measures the impact of earnings management on investment. Our second model employs a logistic regression model to measure the significant variables in companies that over-invest. We find that more important clients have significantly higher investment than less important clients, and that discretionary accruals are significant indicators of over-investment. Less important clients are more conservative in their investments, although they have more investment opportunities. We also observe that the proportion of over-investment drops for clients, regardless of their importance, whose auditors have a long tenure.
The Effect of Client Importance and Auditor Tenure on Accounting Conservatism: Evidence from Chinese Companies
Bing Yu,Mary Jane Lenard
International Business Research , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/ibr.v6n1p176
Abstract: The concern over accounting regulation has resulted in studies of auditor independence and audit quality, as measured by auditor tenure, accounting conservatism, and the type of audit firm the client employs (Big 4 or non-Big 4).In this study, we continue the line of research on conservatism and auditor tenure by examining whether accounting conservatism is related to auditor tenure for Chinese firms. We extend the studies by Jenkins and Velury (2008) and Li (2010) in order to examine Chinese firms that have non-Big 4 auditors, and we investigate whether the association exists for the most important and least important clients of these audit firms. Our findings indicate that least important clients employ more conservative accounting techniques as auditor tenure increases. For the most important clients, there is less conservatism, compared to the least important clients, in the early years of the auditor’s tenure. Our study provides more information about the regulatory issue of mandatory audit firm rotation because our results suggest that mandatory auditor rotation may have an adverse effect on the least important clients of these Chinese audit firms.

Abstract: Human embryonic stem cell (hESC) progenies hold great promise as surrogates for human primary cells, particularly if the latter are not available as in the case of cardiomyocytes. However, high content experimental platforms are lacking that allow the function of hESC-derived cardiomyocytes to be studied under relatively physiological and standardized conditions. Here we describe a simple and robust protocol for the generation of fibrin-based human engineered heart tissue (hEHT) in a 24-well format using an unselected population of differentiated human embryonic stem cells containing 30–40% α-actinin-positive cardiac myocytes. Human EHTs started to show coherent contractions 5–10 days after casting, reached regular (mean 0.5 Hz) and strong (mean 100 μN) contractions for up to 8 weeks. They displayed a dense network of longitudinally oriented, interconnected and cross-striated cardiomyocytes. Spontaneous hEHT contractions were analyzed by automated video-optical recording and showed chronotropic responses to calcium and the β-adrenergic agonist isoprenaline. The proarrhythmic compounds E-4031, quinidine, procainamide, cisapride, and sertindole exerted robust, concentration-dependent and reversible decreases in relaxation velocity and irregular beating at concentrations that recapitulate findings in hERG channel assays. In conclusion this study establishes hEHT as a simple in vitro model for heart research.
On the Feynman-alpha formula for fast neutrons
Johan Anderson,Lenard Pal,Imre Pazsit
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: In this contribution, a stochastic theory for a branching process in a neutron population with two energy levels is investigated. In particular, a variance to mean or Feynman-alpha formula is derived in this generalized scenario using the Kolmogorov forward or master equation theory for the probabilities in a system with a compound Poisson source.
