Controlling the Tax Evasion Dynamics via Majority-Vote Model on Various Topologies  [PDF]
Francisco W. S. Lima
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2012.21017
Abstract: Within the context of agent-based Monte-Carlo simulations, we study the well-known majority-vote model (MVM) with noise applied to tax evasion on simple square lattices (LS), Honisch-Stauffer (SH), directed and undirected Bara-basi-Albert (BAD, BAU) networks. In to control the fluctuations for tax evasion in the economics model proposed by Zaklan, MVM is applied in the neighborhod of the noise critical qc to evolve the Zaklan model. The Zaklan model had been studied recently using the equilibrium Ising model. Here we show that the Zaklan model is robust because this can be studied using equilibrium dynamics of Ising model also through the nonequilibrium MVM and on various topologies cited above giving the same behavior regardless of dynamic or topology used here.
The Dog as a Risk Factor in Transmission of Visceral Leishmaniasis: A Review  [PDF]
Francisco Assis Lima Costa
Advances in Infectious Diseases (AID) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/aid.2012.22006
Abstract: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide. Despite the euthanasia of dogs serologically positive, such action has not solved the endemic in Brazil. A risk area for VL involves the presence of the vector, the occurrence of canines and the record of human cases. The factors that have favored the persistence and spread of VL in Brazil are related to the predatory action of man on the environment, to the migratory movements and rural exodus, and a close coexistence of man and animals. Thus considering the epidemiological chain of VL, one fact seems clear: we do not know yet the true extent of the participation of the dog in the infectious cycle of VL. The clinical disease is an important indicator of the extent of the problem in an endemic area. The immunological events are complex and involve resistance and susceptibility to canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL). One aspect in CVL is that many symptomatic dogs underwent xenodiagnosis not infect the vector. In such cases the pattern recognition receptors CD11b+, TLR2+, and NO present higher values for dogs with results in immunohistochemistry of skin and xenodiagnosis negative (IMH-/XENO-) than dogs with immunohistochemistry in skin and xenodiagnosis positive (IMH+/XENO+), suggesting that innate immunity modulates the competence of the dog to infect the vector. The organic response in CVL varies from individual to individual and within the same individual, with a strong evidence of being organ-specific. Only 20% of asymptomatic dogs have parasites in the skin and 15% are able to recover from clinical signs and eliminate the parasites spontaneously. In this review, we analyze the epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis and clinical, immunological and pathological conditions that can contribute to understanding the role of dogs in transmission of visceral leishmaniasis.
Tax Evasion Dynamics via Non-Equilibrium Model on Complex Networks  [PDF]
Francisco W. S. Lima
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2015.56089
Abstract: The Zaklan model has become an excellent mechanism to control the tax evasion fluctuations (TEF) in a people- or agent-based community. Initially, the equilibrium Ising model (IM) had been used as a dynamic of temporal evolution of the Zaklan model near the critical point of the IM. On some complex network the IM presents no critical points or well-defined phase transitions. Then, through Monte Carlo simulations we study the recurring problem of the TEF control using the version of non-equilibrium Zaklan model as a control mechanism for TEF via agent-based non-equilibrium majority-vote model (MVM). Here we study the TEF on directed Barabási-Albert (BAD) and Apollonian (ANs) networks where the IM is not applied. We show that the Zaklan model can be also studied using non-equilibrium dynamics through of the non-equilibrium MVM on complex topologies cited above, giving the behavior of the TEF regardless of dynamic or topology used here.
Entanglement in the Quantum Phase Transition of the Half-Integer Spin One-Dimensional Heisenberg Model  [PDF]

Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2015.615228
Abstract: We use the Bethe’s ansatz method to study the entanglement of spinons in the quantum phase transition of half integer spin one-dimensional magnetic chains known as quantum wires. We calculate the entanglement in the limit of the number of particles \"\". We obtain an abrupt change in the entanglement next the quantum phase transition point of the anisotropy parameter \"\"?from the gapped phase \"\"?to gapless phase \"\".
Engineering education in the wake of hurricane Katrina
Marybeth Lima
Journal of Biological Engineering , 2007, DOI: 10.1186/1754-1611-1-6
Abstract: Hurricane Katrina struck the gulf coast on August 29, 2005. This natural disaster catastrophically affected the U.S. gulf states and negatively impacted the entire country. My place of residence, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, survived hurricane Katrina with serious but non-catastrophic damage because the edge of the 40 mile wide eye of the storm passed 90 miles to the east of the city.I experienced many events analytically and from an engineering perspective, for example, the doubling of our city population, traffic gridlock, loss of communication (two days), loss of power (three days), and a gas shortage (none for five days, shortage for five weeks). Volunteering in the aftermath of Katrina provided many more experiences that were primarily emotional. I volunteered at the University of New Orleans satellite office that was established on the Louisiana State University (LSU) campus just after the hurricane. Employees were supposed to call in with contact information and their evacuation location; about half the calls I fielded were from relatives of the employees who were trying to ensure that their loved ones were okay. On the rare occasions that a loved one's relative had already contacted us, I could inform the caller that the person was safe, but I wasn't allowed to provide the person's phone number for liability reasons.School classrooms and boy and girl scout troops from all over the country sent school supplies for displaced children; while unpacking these supplies, our public school distribution team read heartfelt words of hope and kindness that frequently brought us to tears.The LSU AgCenter livestock barn, the Parker Coliseum, was turned into a holding area for pets evacuated from the storm. Of all my experiences, the wall of animals seeking people was the most poignant. While staring at approximately 150 Polaroid pictures of animals replete with their names and tags and the words OWNER MISSING printed on every photograph, I realized that I never would have con
Redescoberta da mente na educa??o: a expans?o do aprender e a conquista do conhecimento complexo
Lima, Gilson;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302009000100008
Abstract: this paper focuses on some notes picked during a research linked to the sociology of the sciences and more specifically to the sciences of the mind. after introducing to the theme of the rediscovery of the mind, it stresses the different systematic modalities of the educational practices and the diversifications of their "minditude" states. it then considers one research result that verified the importance of the somatic marker for long term memory and presents a brief conclusion.
Alguns fiéis da igreja universal do reino de Deus
Lima, Diana;
Mana , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132010000200005
Abstract: this article explores the processes of rationalization involved in a person's adherence to the individualist message of prosperity theology. looking to gain a better understanding of the charisma associated with this version of christianity, the text examines a number of elements used in the construction of male subjectivities, such as they appear to members of a network of worshippers from the universal church of the kingdom of god. this network is formed by around 20 men, both single and married, aged between 18 and 45 years with low levels of schooling, living in favelas or on hillsides located on the boundary between the south zone and centre of rio de janeiro. their private and individual strategies for dealing with the problems surfacing in their day-to-day lives and the urgency of the economic challenges confronting them contain a rich set of data, providing us with an insight into the reasons behind the universal church's penetration of brazil's urban working classes.
Mundar o sert?o: ou quando o Jaguaribe virou a?ude no Ceará
Lima,Roberto;
Av?? , 2008,
Abstract: starting form the conflicts for the implementation of the castanh?o dam in jaguaribe river, sert?o of ceará-br, i propose a reading of the displacement and resettlement of the population of 20.000 people who used to live there, beginning from the associated meanings to the term worlding, coined by gayatri spivak, confronting it to interviews carried through dwellers of many communities along jaguaribe river margins that had their lands submerged by castanh?o dam. this is going to implicate the discussion of the process of silence of voices that happened parallel to the evacuation of the area and construction of the referred dam, and at the same time, try to think in the rising possibilities by an active social movement in this region - the "movimento dos atingidos por barragens, mab" - to produce other version of this history through speeches and local cartography, that were violently demolished, deforest and submersed in name of a strange deity called progress.
Funkeiros, timbaleiros e pagodeiros: notas sobre juventude e música negra na cidade de Salvador
Lima, Ari;
Cadernos CEDES , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-32622002000200006
Abstract: in this article, i intend to discuss how, in the racialized context of the association between black youth and music, experiences arise and develop as identity marks, social criticism and the ratification of racial, class and gender hierarchies. to do so, i work with the idea of youth and generation as not only a biological, but also a social and historical data, and with the idea of music as a shared sense. besides, i discuss my own ethnographical observations as well as those of other authors who reflected on the relationship between music and black youth and have basically observed, in various contexts, young, poor, partly negro suburbanites with low schooling, some having a low buying power, others being anxious consumers. i conclude pinpointing the importance of music as a configuration instrument for a youthful and black diaspora experience, but also as an instrument that renews old dissimilarities that are not genetic.
La historia en la basura: los archivos perdidos de Donald Pierson
Lima, Roberto;
Desacatos , 2010,
Abstract: this paper reconstructs and interprets the process that culminated with the destruction of field data archive that the team of donald pierson (1900-1995) collected in its investigation on san francisco river. this archive consisted of several thousands of typed cards, with information collected by 22 researchers who were coordinated by pierson on a research that included ten cities placed throughout san francisco river valley in the 1950's. among other aspects, it discuses the disregard of the entity that held the archive in custody, the underestimation of the author in the historiography of brazilian anthropology, closely linked to the criticism of community studies, and the vulnerability of brazilian archives.
