Measurable Chromatic Number of Spheres

Abstract: We examine the measurable chromatic number of distance colorings on the surface of 2-dimensional spheres of varying radii, showing in particular that similar arguments to those used to raise lower bounds in the plane work for all but a countable set of radii. Furthermore, we show that measurable chromatic number as a function of the radius, or more generally the curvature, is not monotonic.
Typicality and misinformation: Two sources of distortion

Abstract: This study examined the effect of two sources of memory error: exposure to post-event information and extracting typical contents from schemata. Participants were shown a video of a bank robbery and presented with highand low-typicality misinformation extracted from two normative studies. The misleading suggestions consisted of either changes in the original video information or additions of completely new contents. In the subsequent recognition task the post-event misinformation produced memory impairment. The participants used the underlying schema of the event to extract high-typicality information which had become integrated with episodic information, thus giving rise to more hits and false alarms for these items. However, the effect of exposure to misinformation was greater on low-typicality items. There were no differences between changed or added information, but there were more false alarms when a low-typicality item was changed to a high-typicality item

Abstract: La incorporación de información falsa en la memoria de un suceso delictivo puede alterar el subsiguiente testimonio. Para estudiar la aceptación de tres tipos diferentes de información falsa se realizaron tres experimentos aplicando el paradigma de la información enga osa. Los resultados se alan que los detalles (vs. acciones), los contenidos periféricos (vs. centrales) y la información de tipicidad alta (vs. baja) se aceptan con mayor facilidad.

Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Properties of Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) Seeds

Abstract: The contents and antioxidant ability of various classes of phenolic compounds present in the seeds of twenty soybean hybrids were evaluated. Total phenolics, tannins and proanthocyanidins were determined spectrophotometrically, after extraction of seeds with 70% aqueous acetone. In addition, the flavonoid contents were determined. The antioxidant activity of aqueous acetone extracts was evaluated by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. The highest contents of total phenolics were found in Serbian cultivar 1511 and Chinese cultivar LN92-7369, which also displayed the highest total antioxidant activity. Conversely, genotypes poor in phenolics also showed low levels of DPPH-radical scavenging activity. The results suggested that besides protein and oil contents, the phenolic contents should be also considered as an important characteristic feature of soybean seeds, and as a potential selection criterion for antioxidant activity in soybean.
Influence of the typicality of the actions in a mugging script on retrieval-induced forgetting

Abstract: La investigación ha mostrado que el simple acto de recordar puede causar olvido temporal o inhibición de contenidos relacionados en la memoria. En este estudio se amplía el efecto del olvido inducido por la recuperación a la memoria de las acciones de un suceso. A partir de un estudio normativo se seleccionaron acciones de tipicidad alta y baja de un robo a una persona en la calle. Los participantes estudiaron hechos comprobados (acciones de tipicidad alta) y hechos no comprobados (acciones de tipicidad baja). Después recuperaron la mitad de las acciones de tipicidad alta, baja o, en el caso del grupo control, sin práctica de recuperación. En la prueba final los tres grupos recordaron los hechos comprobados y no comprobados estudiados. En las acciones de tipicidad baja se obtuvo el olvido inducido por la recuperación convencional, pero no se produjo inhibición en las acciones de tipicidad alta. Este resultado sugiere que la activación del guión del suceso pudo proteger la información de tipicidad alta del olvido inducido por la recuperación. La integración de las acciones que forman el guión del suceso hace que sean resistentes a procesos inhibitorios.
Recuperación parcial en la memoria de testigos, un arma de doble filo

Abstract: Las víctimas y los testigos de delitos son interrogados en repetidas ocasiones, pero las preguntas no suelen abarcar todos los contenidos del suceso. La recuperación selectiva favorece el recuerdo, consolidación y mantenimiento de la información aportada, pero también puede promover el olvido de contenidos relacionados en la memoria, contenidos potencialmente relevantes para resolver un caso.
Efecto del tipo de prueba de evaluación en la memoria y valoración de marcas publicitarias

Abstract: memory tests are frequently used to measure the effectiveness of an advertisement. however, as different tests provide different kinds of information it is important to know which type of test is the most appropriate. the main objective of this investigation was to study the effect of different memory tests on the number of brands recalled and the level of interest generated by them. a group of participants wrote down all the brands of any kind of product that they remembered having seen advertised (free recall test) and rated their interest in each brand. subsequently, the participants were given a list of 27 categories and wrote down the brands they associated with the categories (cued recall test) and also rated their level of interest. the results showed that although the participants generated more brand names with the cued recall test, the brand names mentioned in the free recall test generated greater interest. these results highlight the importance of choosing the correct memory test to measure the effect of publicity.
Differences in Carcass and Meat Quality between Organically Reared Cocks and Capons

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to compare carcass and meat quality traits of ecologically reared capons and cocks. The experiment comprised 60 layer-type Slovenian hybrid Prelux-G chickens. Half of the animals were caponized at the age of 52 days (app. 0.5 kg body mass) and another half were left entire males. All chickens were reared on the same farm respecting requirements for ecological farming. Chickens were fed commercial feed mixtures combined with the free access to pasture. After the slaughter (185 days), the chickens were dissected and main carcass parts were weighed. Meat quality (pH, colour, water-holding capacity) and chemical composition (protein, water, intramuscular fat) were determined. Birds of both groups had similar weight of carcass and body parts, except for weight of the thighs with drumsticks and off al weight, which were significantly lower in capons. The main differences in carcass traits appeared in the abdominal fat tissue. Capons had more abdominal fat. Meat physico-chemical characteristics (pH, drip loss) were similar in both groups, except for the colour. Capons had lighter (higher Minolta L*value) and less red (lower Minolta a* value) colour of meat as cocks. There was no difference between capons and cocks in the content of muscle proteins, water and intramuscular fat.
Mineral composition of selected Salvia species growing wild in the Vojvodina Province

Abstract: Composition of mineral elements has been investigated in three Salvia species (Lumiaceae) growing wild in the Vojvodina Province (Serbia), as well as in a commercial phytopreparation (tea) of Salvia officinalis L. We determined concentrations of micro- and macroelements in dried plant material in order to evaluate their nutritive and medicinal value and to indicate an easily accessible natural source that could be used as a possible food supplement. The study showed that the plants were well supplied with essential elements. Concentrations of potentially harmful heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr) were below their respective toxic levels. From the nutritive and medicinal aspects, the investigated Salvia species may be considered as a natural source of essential microelements, especially Fe and Cu, with a low capacity for heavy metal accumulation.
