Milk, social acceptance of a new food in Europe: Catalonia, 19th-20th centuries
Nicolau-Nos,Roser; Pujol-Andreu,Josep; Hernández,Ismael;
Dynamis , 2010, DOI: 10.4321/S0211-95362010000100005
Abstract: in this article we analyse the time course of the consumption of fresh milk in different regions of europe between the 1870s and 1930s. working from the case of catalonia, we affirm that the increasing consumption of milk in that period must be especially linked to the spreading of new scientific knowledge in microbiology and nutrition that followed pasteur's discoveries. we particularly highlight the information dissemination activities in this direction carried out by health sector professionals (medical doctors and pharmacists), governing local institutions and the milk industry. the initiatives developed by these groups changed people's preferences -fresh milk became accepted as a necessary food-stuff, and demand for it increased. however, the evolution of consumption was not the same in all regions of europe due to their different environmental and agronomic conditions.
Modelling of Fatigue-Type Seismic Damage for Nuclear Power Plants  [PDF]
Tamás János Katona
Open Journal of Safety Science and Technology (OJSST) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojsst.2012.22006
Abstract: Assessment of seismic safety of the nuclear power plants requires knowledge of plant fragilities. In the paper, preliminary analysis is made on use of the cumulative absolute velocity in modelling of fatiguetype seismic damage. The dependence of the cumulative absolute velocity on the strong motion parameters is analysed. It is demonstrated that the cumulative absolute velocity is an appropriate damage indicator for fatigue failure mode. Failure criteria are defined in terms of cumulative absolute velocity using various fatigue failure theories.
In Vivo magnetic resonance techniques and drug discovery
Beckmann, Nicolau;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332006000100006
Abstract: the long and resource intensive process of drug discovery and development is confronted with the basic challenge of providing effective and safe therapies at reasonably low costs. the better the mechanism of a disease is known, the higher the probability to find an appropriate therapy. also, the better and earlier a disease can be diagnosed and characterized, the higher the chance to be able to interfere in this process with a chemical entity. this reasoning sets the framework for the use of imaging in drug discovery. we discuss the relevance of magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy to derive anatomical, functional, metabolic and target-related information in the context of pharmacological research in vivo.
Disciplina partidária e base parlamentar na Camara dos Deputados no primeiro governo Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-1998)
Nicolau, Jairo;
Dados , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582000000400004
Abstract: this article analyzes the activity of the political parties in the brazilian house of representatives during the first fernando henrique cardoso administration (1995-98). the main source of data is the result of head-count votes. three aspects are emphasized: the degree of party discipline; the parties? rate of support for bills sponsored by the administration; and the impact of maverick voting and absenteeism on the voting results. the link between the two dimensions treated separately by the literature (party discipline and party support for the administration) shows that the strategy of evaluating presidential power simply by counting the members of representatives formally belonging to the executive?s constituency should be done with caution in countries with undisciplined parties and high absenteeism during head-count votes.
Partidos na república de 1946: uma réplica metodológica
Nicolau, Jairo;
Dados , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582005000300005
Abstract: this article discusses some questions raised by wanderley guilherme dos santos in the article "old theses, new data: a methodological analysis", published in dados - revista de ciências sociais. the paper focuses particularly on an important methodological discussion, namely the measurement of political events. two topics in the party system are specifically explored: the dispersion of congressional voting and power (fragmentation rates) and territorial dispersion of voting (partisan nationalization rates).
Partidos na República de 1946: velhas teses, novos dados
Nicolau, Jairo;
Dados , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582004000100003
Abstract: this article proposes a new way of organizing brazilian electoral data from 1945 to 1962 and discusses some classic interpretations of the country?s political party system. one obstacle to research on parties in the republic of 1946 was the lack of complete party-by-party data. the reason is that official statistics did not distinguish data by party in the case of joint party slates for the legislative branch. the purpose of this study was to overcome this limitation by identifying the party affiliations of candidates in each slate. this approach allowed the partisan identification of nearly all of the votes. the second part of the article evaluates some of the classic political proposals from the same period: conservative parties were on the decline and the brazilian labor party (ptb) on the rise; parties were undergoing continuous nationalization; and the party system was becoming increasingly fragmented.
Como Controlar o Representante?: Considera??es sobre as Elei??es para a Camara dos Deputados no Brasil
Nicolau, Jairo;
Dados , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582002000200002
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to explore the mechanisms that have been used by brazilian voters to punish and reward their representatives. the article has three sections. the first discusses theoretical aspects of electoral control issues in traditional democracies. the second specifically analyzes two dimensions of the brazilian system of representation: a) whether accountability operates on a partisan or personalized basis and b) the impact of the institutional arrangement on voters? capacity to evaluate their representatives (clarity of responsibility). the last section explores some specific electoral control mechanisms exercised by brazilian voters in the 1998 elections for house of representatives.
O sistema eleitoral de lista aberta no Brasil
Nicolau, Jairo;
Dados , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52582006000400002
Abstract: this article analyzes the open-list electoral system in brazil in the elections for the chamber of deputies (lower house) and compares it to other countries that employ this mechanism. the author describes the history and functioning of the prevailing electoral system; evaluates the list's impact on parties, voters, and the relationship between deputies and their constituencies; and discusses the mechanisms offered by the electoral system for voters to either punish or reward their representatives. linking the brazilian case to current analyses of electoral systems, the article draws on evidence from three studies conducted with members of the brazilian congress and voters.
Management & Marketing , 2010,
Abstract: The objective of this exploratory study is even the delineation of a profile of a employee of success, mentioning that in this context the term “success” will have the meaning of performant/of producer of positive results (financial). The delineation of such a profile will begin with the recruitment process (general criteria), with the selection process (specific criteria, correlated with the responsibilities of the specific post), and continues with the perfectioning process, as well as with the evaluation process. The subjects of the present exploratory study were selected in an aleatory manner within the distribution firm - Sc Moldways Srl Ia i. For obtaining a representative pattern it was used a number of 20 subjects (employees), and a sampling in layers”, namely the method of gathering data (in the present case – the questionnaire) was applied to employees from different departments and to employees situeted on all the hierarchical levels; as it fallows: - 5 perssons (the general manager, and the three departments managers); - inferior/ intermediate level: 15 persons (2 delivering agents, 10 sales agents, etc.).
Practitioners' Tools in Analysing Financial Markets Evolution
Mihaela Nicolau
Acta Universitatis Danubius : Oeconomica , 2010,
Abstract: In a chaotic and confusing place as world of investing is, the practitioners, who operate onmarkets every day, have continuously searched to forecast properly the market movements. Moreminded to financial speculations, practitioners analyse financial markets looking for potentialweaknesses of the Efficient Market Hypothesis, and most of the times their methods are criticized byacademics. This article intends to present the traditional tools used by traders and brokers in analysingfinancial markets, emphasizing on critical opinions and scientific works published on this argumentby now.
