Hypothalamic metabolic compartmentation during appetite regulation as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy methods

Abstract: We review the role of neuroglial compartmentation and transcellular neurotransmitter cycling during hypothalamic appetite regulation as detected by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Spectroscopy (MRS) methods. We address first the neurochemical basis of neuroendocrine regulation in the hypothalamus and the orexigenic and anorexigenic feed-back loops that control appetite. Then we examine the main MRI and MRS strategies that have been used to investigate appetite regulation. Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI), Blood oxygenation level-dependent contrast (BOLD), and Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) have revealed Mn2+ accumulations, augmented oxygen consumptions, and astrocytic swelling in the hypothalamus under fasting conditions, respectively. High field 1H magnetic resonance in vivo, showed increased hypothalamic myo-inositol concentrations as compared to other cerebral structures. 1H and 13C high resolution magic angle spinning (HRMAS) revealed increased neuroglial oxidative and glycolytic metabolism, as well as increased hypothalamic glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmissions under orexigenic stimulation. We propose here an integrative interpretation of all these findings suggesting that the neuroendocrine regulation of appetite is supported by important ionic and metabolic transcellular fluxes which begin at the tripartite orexigenic clefts and become extended spatially in the hypothalamus through astrocytic networks becoming eventually MRI and MRS detectable.
El problema del nominalismo en la definición spinozista del alma
Braicovich, Rodrigo Sebastián;
Diánoia , 2008,
Abstract: the answer that i give to the problem of nominalism in the work of baruch spinoza determines in a decisive fashion the possibilities of replying affirmatively to the question about human nature. to decide (along with a large number of contemporary interpreters of spinoza's philosophy) that the latter is ultimately built upon nominalistic principles forces us to do away with every ontological foundation of human nature, touchstone concept of spinoza's deduction both of the affects and of the therapeutic strategies that show the way to beatitudo. my aim, on the contrary, consists in bringing to light the necessarily universal component that underlies spinoza's psychology. aiming at this, i review not only certain key aspects regarding the problem of the kinds of knowledge, but also the spinozistic theory of definition.

EURE (Santiago) , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0250-71612009000200004
Abstract: in recent years, existingforms of daily urban mobility and their social and environmental impacts have become issues of debate and public concern. in this article we explore this issue through a specific case study: the analysis of the motives and perceptions that lie behind the acquisition and use of cars by low income residents in santiago de chile. firstly we analyze how the car and the type of urban mobility that is generated are understood in terms of social and urban theory. secondly, we present some general tendencies of car use in santiago. next we look in detail at the principal arguments behind acquisition, use and valuing of the vehicle by a group of low income users in the city. finally, we offer, based on the analysis, some ideas that can contribute to the design of public policies that incentivize forms of sustainable urban mobility in the city.

Abstract: a transitional piece added to several standard containers -borrowed from the shipping industry- allows its association and a more flexible architectural performance. it generates wider and higher interior spaces that are now able to get natural light and ventilation; after the earthquake, these containers are seen as fast-assembly, recyclable ready-mades capable of become emergency infrastructure.

ARQ (Santiago) , 2003, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-69962003005300009
Abstract: the dominican republic?s weather makes it necessary to produce shadow for many everyday activities. a great covered square would not be surprising then, even though it contradicts our usual conception of outdoors public spaces. this project is part of a set of proposals produced by architectural studios all around the world, commissioned by the local government in order to renew the face of santo domingo.
Funcionamento cognitivo e habilidades metalinguísticas na aprendizagem da leitura
Urquijo, Sebastián;
Educar em Revista , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-40602010000300003
Abstract: this work aims at analyzing the cognitive operation relations and the dominion of the metalinguistic abilities with the formal reading learning process during the school's first year. the metalinguistic abilities imply the conscientious reflection upon the different levels from the linguistic system and they are developed during childhood, perfecting itself with the schooling process. the cognitive operation involves necessary processes to perceive, select, process and store information, which are relevant tasks in a complex process like reading. a total of 127 primary education students from the basic cycle first year of two public and two private schools of mar del plata city, argentina, were evaluated with psychological instruments to determine their performances in memory, awareness, executive functions, reasoning, metalinguistic abilities and reading. the results indicate that both the mental processes and the metalinguistic abilities are associated significantly to the performance in different reading measures. the conclusions discuss these relations and highlight the individual factors influence in the process of reading learning.
Relaciones entre el Congreso Nacional y el Poder Judicial: La Importancia de la Apertura
Soto Velasco,Sebastián;
Ius et Praxis , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-00122007000100006
Abstract: this paper analyzes the relationship between the chilean congress and judicial power, focusing on two institutions: the nomination process to appoint supreme court justices and the reports that the supreme court is constitutionally obligated to send to the congress when specific types of bills are introduced. the appointment of supreme court candidates is studied from the senate's incorporation in the process from 1997 until 2005. the author states that a more transparent process, including the publication of the candidate's backgrounds and public hearings, would increase the incentives to nominate the most qualified candidates. the paper also analyzes the reports that the supreme court sends to the congress when bills modifying the organization and functions of the courts are introduced (article 77 of the chilean constitution). in this case, as well as the other, facilitating access to these reports would have positive consequences for the legislative process. in sum, although there are other means of communication between both branches, the paper focuses on these two institutions because it concludes that their value and influence would increase by making them more accountable and transparent
