Yam: a neglected and underutilized crop in Brazil
Siqueira, MVBM;
Horticultura Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-05362011000100003
Abstract: in brazil current studies and investments on yams are incipient. similarly, the literature in recent decades lacks adequate information on this group of plants. the existing literature, on its turn, requires more than ever to be revised and organized. yams have joined the so-called "neglected" group of crops for several reasons, but particularly because they are associated with poor and traditional communities. many vegetables introduced in brazil during the colonization period have adapted to different cropping systems, yams being an excellent example. this diversity resulted very widespread, yet poorly recognized in the country. in turn, the gardens using traditional farming systems continue to maintain and enhance yam local varieties. studies from other countries, with an emphasis on characterization and genetic breeding, brought to light an urgent need for brazil to invest in yams as a food rich in carbohydrates, even to the point of alterations in food public policy. reversal of the yam's current stigma is both a challenge to the scientific community and to the population as a whole. this paper aims to raise pertinent questions about dioscorea species, an important key group for many communities in tropical countries, yet still unrecognized as so in brazil.

Siqueira, Deis;
Sociedade e Estado , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69922008000200008
Abstract: this article retrieves classic questions of the sociology of religion such as society's supremacy, social cohesion, moral forces, membership, rationalized and intellectualized modernity, alienation, and illusion to reflect the contemporary religious labyrinth. this begins mainly with the search for a non-conventional religiosity, a pluralistic religious field, transit, bricolage, privatization and individualization, spirituality and environmentalism, spirituality in the organizational context, the "entrepeneurshipping" of the churches and the spiritualization of companies, stressing a general tendency towards "spirituality yes, religion no".

Entre percursos, fontes e sujeitos: pesquisa em educa??o e uso da história oral
Esquinsani, Rosimar Serena Siqueira;
Educa??o e Pesquisa , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-97022012005000001
Abstract: this article is a commentary on oral history, presenting reflections about the collaborative position of the subject in researches, and some of the consequences of this singular position. as an illustrative contribution the article starts from a study previously carried out, which refers to the political and religious disputes that preceded the sanctioning of the 4024 law of national education bases and guidelines of 1961. in constructing this study, oral history was used as a methodology dedicated to recovering information and the very constitution of the collaborative subjects based on their social locus and on the relations and reactions to the fact narrated. centering the reflections on the position of the subject as a source for the research - without discussing or going deeper into the episode mentioned -, the article considers that reconstructing the memory of that period also meant to rekindle caricatures, contradictions and conflicts present in the particular interpretations of each one of the collaborators. the text also presents excerpts from narratives used in the empirical research, which demonstrate that the description of the facts by the participating subjects did not lose its statute of a personal perception, constituting a representation of the social group to which the subjects believed to belong. in conclusion, the article suggests that the capturing of memory is always a referential task: at that moment and under those conditions the narrative made those nuances possible.
