Sexual Dysfunctions of HIV-Positive Men: Associated Factors, Pathophysiology Issues, and Clinical Management

Advances in Urology , 2011, DOI: 10.1155/2011/854792
Abstract: Sexual dysfunctions in HIV-positive men are associated with an increase in risky sexual behavior and decreased adherence to antiretroviral drug regimens. Because of these important public health issues, we reviewed the literature on the pathophysiology, associated factors and clinical management of sexual dysfunction in HIV-positive men. The goal was to investigate the current research on these issues. Literature searches were performed in June 2011 on PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycInfo databases with the keywords “AIDS” and “sexual dysfunction” and “HIV” and “sexual dysfunction”, resulting in 54 papers. Several researchers have investigated the factors associated with sexual dysfunction in HIV-positive men. The association between sexual dysfunction and antiretroviral drugs, particularly protease inhibitors, has been reported in many studies. The lack of standardized measures in many studies and the varying study designs are the main reasons that explain the controversial results. Despite some important findings, the pathophysiology of sexual dysfunction in the HAART era still not completely understood. Clinical trials of testosterone replacement therapy have shown the treatment to be beneficial to the improvement of sexual dysfunctions related to hypogonadism. However, there are not enough psychological intervention studies to make conclusions regarding the therapeutic effects of psychotherapy. 1. Introduction Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has previously been shown to provide the best clinical management for HIV-infected patients, as it decreases the prevalence of hypogonadism and advanced HIV disease, which are the principal causes of sexual dysfunction in people infected with HIV [1, 2]. However, the prevalence of sexual dysfunctions in the years since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which varies according to the cultural and methodological issues of the studies in question, includes high rates of erectile dysfunction (ED) (9–74%), ejaculatory disturbances (36–42%), and low sexual desire (LSD) (24–73%) [2]. In an English clinical study conducted in 2001 with 78 HIV-positive gay men, 69% reported one or more sexual problems. ED was reported by 38% of the men, which rose to 51% in the context of trying to use condoms. Loss of interest in sex was reported by 41%, and 24% experienced delayed ejaculation [3]. From October 2002 to January 2003, a case-control Brazilian study nested in a cross-sectional population of individuals with AIDS found that almost 50% of the men reported ejaculatory symptoms, 33%
About the kinetics and mechanism of the reactions of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol, with Zn2+, Cu2+ and Zn2++Cu2+ equimolar mixtures, in aqueous solutions
Rossi, A. V.;Tubino, M.;
Eclética Química , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-46702003000100007
Abstract: the kinetics and mechanism of the reactions between 4(2pyridylazo)-resorcinol and zn2+, cu2+ and zn2++cu2+ equimolar mixtures were studied. the reactions were performed in aqueous solution (ph = 8.5, borate buffer) and monitored spectrophotometrically at 500 nm using stopped-flow technique. spectral and kinetic data indicate that the zn2++cu2+ equimolar mixture behaves as an unique species and it can be attributed to the interactions of zn2+ and of cu2+ with water molecules in the aqueous solution. a mechanism is proposed and the rate constants are calculated.
A green method for determination of acid number of biodiesel
Tubino, Matthieu;Aricetti, Juliana A.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532011000600011
Abstract: a simple green method for the determination of the acid number of biodiesel is described. the sample is dissolved in a 1:1 v/v ethanol:water mixture, avoiding the use of the usual toluene:isopropanol:water mixture (1:0.95:0.5 v/v/v). the titration is performed with a 0.02 mol l-1 naoh solution in water. the method was compared with that of abnt nbr 14448, which is similar to astm d 664 and to en 14104. a statistical comparison using the student's t test and the snedecor f test showed that the proposed method offers equivalent results to abnt nbr 14448, with better precision.
Contention, participation, and mobilization in environmental assessment follow-up: the Itabira experience
John Devlin,Denise Isabel Tubino
Sustainability : Science, Practice and Policy , 2012,
Abstract: This article analyzes the public participation and follow-up stages of the environmental assessment process to secure an operating license for an iron-ore mine in Itabira, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Vale, a major Brazilian mining company, eventually received authorization to begin operations in 2000, but only after making significant concessions to public demands on a variety of environmental and social conditions. In the years following the approval, Vale met several conditions regarding environmental cleanup, parks and infrastructure, water protection, and commitment to the local community. However, over time some of these activities were interrupted or aborted, while a number of conditions were never met. This article suggests that these weaknesses in follow-up were a consequence of the demobilization and retreat of the state and a parallel demobilization of civil society after 2000. The case demonstrates that state and public attentiveness can be episodic and suggests that high-profile agreements do not assure sustainable outcomes. Institutionalized participatory monitoring and management units appear necessary for continued environmental management that pursues long-term sustainability.

Abstract: Today accounting assumes an intermediary role for the dissemination of its interaction with the environment and the possible consequences that business activities can cause. This paper seeks to analyze how they are being treated and released the environmental accounting information and its interaction with the sustainable development in rice processing mills, affiliated with ‘Associa o Rede Arrozeiras do Sul’, located in Santa Maria/RS. To achieve the objectives of this paper, the methodology used was a quantitative, descriptive and bibliographical. The period in which was conducted the collecting of information and analysis of data was from September to October 2011. The results found that 50% of companies are aware of the existence of environmental accounting, but none of which enjoys all the benefits it can bring. It is alleged that the information of environmental accounting does not outweigh the cost-benefit, and therefore end up behind the scenes. With regard to sustainable development, it is clear that the majority (75%) are aware and performs environmental actions. By analyzing the disclosure of an accounting environment, it was found that there is much to be explored at this point, because today the little information that is presented in financial statements for the company are placed only in the Notes.
Diffusion Enhanced Upconversion in Organic Systems
A. Monguzzi,R. Tubino,F. Meinardi
International Journal of Photoenergy , 2008, DOI: 10.1155/2008/684196
Abstract: The upconverted fluorescence generation in a solution of multicomponent organic systems has been studied as a function of the temperature to investigate the role of resonant energy transfer processes and of the molecular diffusion on the overall emission yield. The strong blue emission observed exciting the samples at 532 nm derives from a bimolecular triplet-triplet annihilation between 9,10 diphenylanthracene molecules, which produces singlet excited states from which the higher energy emission takes place. Diphenylanthracene excited triplet states are populated by energy transfer from a phosphorescent donor (Pt(II)octaethylporphyrin) which acts as excitation light harvesting. At low temperature, the experimental data on the efficiency of the transfer have been interpreted in the frame of a Dexter energy transfer in the Perrin approximation. At room temperature, the fast diffusion of the molecules has been found to be the main factor which affects the energy transfer rates and the overall photon upconversion efficiency.
Flow injection visible diffuse reflectance quantitative analysis of total sulfur in biodiesel, in plant leaves and in natural waters
Tubino, Matthieu;Queiroz, Carlos A.R.;
Eclética Química , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-46702009000200004
Abstract: flow injection (fi) methodology, using diffuse reflectance in the visible region of the spectrum, for the analysis of total sulfur in the form of sulfate, precipitated in the form of barium sulfate, is presented. the method was applied to biodiesel, to plant leaves and to natural waters analysis. the analytical signal (s) correlates linearly with sulfate concentration (c) between 20 and 120 ppm, through the equation s=-1.138+0.0934 c (r = 0.9993). the experimentally observed limit of detection is about 10 ppm. the mean r.s.d. is about 3.0 %. real samples containing sulfate were analyzed and the results obtained by the fi and by the reference batch turbidimetric method using the statistical student's t-test and f-test were compared.
