Pedro Vaz
International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 2010, DOI: 10.1155/2010/612360
Abstract: We define two functors from Elias and Khovanov's diagrammatic Soergel category, one targeting Clark-Morrison-Walker's category of disoriented s l ( 2 ) cobordisms and the other targeting the category of (universal) s l ( 3 ) foams.
Mais idade e menos cidadania
Análise Psicológica , 1998,
Abstract: the article reports the results of a study about the social integration of elderly people with functional autonomy, in terms of their well-being in urban and rural environments. main analysis factors: the relationship established between the social equipments for elderly people and the personal satisfaction level that is felt; the conditions personal protagonism in the elderly people's afectivity, socialization and autonomy in the family and social environments. the results obtained suggest the existence of sociability and solidarity, both in the family and the neighbourhood levels, felt more strongly in rural environments. moreover, the strict rules involving the functioning and the distancing of the family groups of elderly people, imposed by social equipment, work negatively on the elderly people's personal fulfilment. furthermore, the constant support given by the elderly people to their families and especially to their grandchildren becomes, to themselves, an important way of social integration, not easily recognised but with great social value.
O ensino e a saúde: um olhar biológico

Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1999000600017
Abstract: living systems are structure determined systems. teaching is never feasible, but learning is inevitable, a comment by an observer about some aspect of the constant changes occurring while life goes on. teachers are all those who open up spaces for conviviality and allow congruent changes to take place. there are no instructive interactions in nature. health and the biology of living systems are phenomena studied in different domains. what is healthy or unhealthy for humans, is defined by human culture. as biological phenomena, health and disease are relational configurations of the organism and its medium. from this perspective, individual health is a social phenomenon.

ABSTRACT This article presents the thesis that the concept of risk orients contemporary conceptions of morality. The argument is developed along two axes. First, the diagnostic of the substitution of norm by risk as the basic concept through which Western individuals conceive the power of their actions and therefore inhabit time. These concepts orient the ways in which individuals work upon their bodies and mental states in order to attain a desirable stateof being in the future. The second axe posits a recent transformation in capitalism and techno-scientific developments as agents in the production of subjectivity. Finally, the article elaborates key aspects of the recent relevance of communication media to quotidian morality. Keywords: Risk; norm; capitalism; technology; media.
Signatures of an Emergent Gravity from Black Hole Entropy

Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1007/s10714-009-0848-0
Abstract: The existence of a thermodynamic description of horizons indicates that spacetime has a microstructure. While the "fundamental" degrees of freedom remain elusive, quantizing Einstein's gravity provides some clues about their properties. A quantum AdS black hole possesses an equispaced mass spectrum, independent of Newton's constant, $G$, when its horizon radius is large compared to the AdS length. Moreover, the black hole's thermodynamics in this limit is inextricably connected with its thermodynamics in the opposite (Schwarzschild) limit by a duality of the Bose partition function. $G$, absent in the mass spectrum, reemerges in the thermodynamic description through the Schwarzschild limit, which should be viewed as a natural "ground state". It seems that the Hawking-Page phase transition separates fundamental, "particle-like" degrees of freedom from effective, "geometric" ones.
Quantizing Gravitational Collapse
Cenalo Vaz
Physics , 2004,
Abstract: I summarize some results obtained from a canonical quantization of gravitational collapse. The quantization is carried out in Kuchar variables on the LeMaitre-Tolman-Bondi family of spacetimes. I show how mass quantization, the black hole entropy and Hawking radiation may be understood in these models. Hawking radiation is obtained in the WKB approximation but the first order quantum gravity correction makes the near-horizon spectrum non-thermal, suggesting that unitarity is preserved. The quantization may be used to study quantum gravity effects in collapse leading to the formation of both covered and naked singularities.
Quantum gravitational dust collapse does not result in a black hole

Physics , 2014, DOI: 10.1016/j.nuclphysb.2014.12.021
Abstract: Quantum gravity suggests that the paradox recently put forward by Almheiri et. al. (AMPS) can be resolved if matter does not undergo continuous collapse to a singularity but condenses on the apparent horizon. One can then expect a quasi-static object to form even after the gravitational field has overcome any degeneracy pressure of the matter fields. We consider dust collapse. If the collapse terminates on the apparent horizon, the Misner-Sharp mass function of the dust ball is predicted and we construct static solutions with no tangential pressure that would represent such a compact object. The collapse wave functions indicate that there will be processes by which energy extraction from the center occurs. These leave behind a negative point mass at the center which contributes to the total energy of the system but has no effect on the the energy density of the dust ball. The solutions describe a compact object whose boundary lies outside its Schwarzschild radius and which is hardly distinguishable from a neutron star.
A Lagrangian Description of Thermodynamics
Cenalo Vaz
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: The fact that a temperature and an entropy may be associated with horizons in semi-classical general relativity has led many to suspect that spacetime has microstructure. If this is indeed the case then its description via Riemannian geometry must be regarded as an effective theory of the aggregate behavior of some more fundamental degrees of freedom that remain unknown, in many ways similar to the treatment of fluid dynamics via the Navier-Stokes equations. This led us to ask how a geometric structure may naturally arise in thermodynamics or statistical mechanics and what evolution may mean in this context. In this article we argue that it is possible to view thermodynamic processes as the evolution of a dynamical system, described by a quadratic Lagrangian and a metric on the thermodynamic configuration space. The Lagrangian is an invariant distance between equilibrium thermodynamic states as defined by the metric, which is straightforwardly obtained from a complete set of equations of state.
