Cross-National Analysis on Sensitivity to Environmental Quality and Its Change in East Asia  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper aims to compare people’s sensitivity to environmental change in China, Japan and South Korea across spatial and temporal dimensions by analysing the data derived from a cross-national survey. Based on the analytical results derived from 3907 samples, the consistency of people’s environmental sensitivity on the temporal dimension and the gap on the spatial dimension are clarified. The analysis on the temporal dimension indicates that people are inclined to hold a consistent evaluation toward environmental change, while the analysis on the spatial dimension of environmental sensitivity indicates that people are more sensitive to the deterioration of global rather than domestic environmental change. Data analysis also indicates that Japanese and South Koreans are pessimistic regarding the change of the environment while the Chinese are optimistic. In addition, the attributive features of individuals who are more sensitive to the environmental change are clarified within each country, and the results show that under different social backgrounds, the influence of demographic factors is somewhat dissimilar.

Abstract: This paper introduced the study on preparation and properties of resin dye-fixatives on cotton fabrics in detail, and analysize the relations between their different structures, molecular weight and their fastness properties, from which some disciplines were obtained. Lastly, some suggestions on resolving the shortcomings of resin dye-fixatives on cotton fabrics were given according to the liturature results.

Abstract: Magnetic measurements were performed on apparently deformed igneous rocks of 23 sites from the southeastern part of the Taimyr Peninsula. Rock magnetism and reflected light microscopy analyses reveal that fine-grained titanomagnetites up to pure magnetites mainly carry the majority of magnetic fabrics in the sills, and that the slightly coarser Ti-poor or-medium titanomagnetites carry most magnetic fabrics in the basaltic flows. Magnetic anisotropies were determined by applying anisotropy of low-field magnetic susceptibility (AMS) on 180 unheated samples and 128 samples that had been previously heated to 600°C during a paleomagnetic study to detect heating effects on the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) properties of volcanic rocks. Laboratory heating significantly affects anisotropy variations of these igneous rocks corresponding to the mineralogical changes during the heat treatment.
K-Ar dating of late Mesozoic volcanism and geochemistry of volcanic gravels in the North Huaiyang Belt, Dabie orogen: Constraints on the stratigraphic framework and exhumation of the northern Dabie orthogneiss complex

Abstract: Two eruption episodes are identified through systematic field investigations and K-Ar dating of the late Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the North Huaiyang belt (NHB), Dabie orogenic belt, of which the earlier volcanic suite termed Maotanchang Fm. (Fm.) occurring at Jinzhai, Xianhualing and Maotanchang, etc., was erupted from 149 Ma to 138 Ma. The other named Xiaotian Fm. mainly distributed at Xiaotian, Shucheng, etc., was formed between 132 Ma and 116 Ma. During the eruption gap of the two volcanic suites deposited a volcano-sedimentary conglomerate layer, which are composed of the multi-compositional gravels, including the North Dabie orthogneiss complex (NDOC), volcanic gravels, etc. These volcanic gravels in the conglomerate layer show identical geochemical and isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr(t) =0.7084–0.7092, εNd (t) = 21.8– 24.4) to the Maotanchang Fm. volcanic rocks (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7086–0.7102, εNd= 19.2– 24.4), but significantly distinct from those of Xiaotian Fm. (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7076–0.7084, εNd= 17.2– 19.2). K-Ar dating results of its underlying and overlying volcanic sequences indicate that the conglomerate layers were deposited at 135 Ma. This suggests that the NDOC was rapidly exhumed to the surface during or shortly before 135 Ma and became the important provenance of the late Mesozoic volcano-sedimentary basins in the NHB. In combination with the regional volcano-sedimentary correlation, we divided the Mesozoic stratigraphic sequence in the NHB from base to top into Fanghushan Fm. (>160 Ma), Yuantongshan Fm. (/middlelower segment of Sanjianpu Fm.) (160–149 Ma), Maotanchang Fm. (/Zhougongshan Fm./upper segment of Sanjianpu Fm./Fenghuangtai Fm.) (149–135 Ma) and Xiaotian Fm. (/Baidafan Fm./Heshidu Fm.) (135–116 Ma).
UFO: "Unidentified" Floating Object Driven by Thermocapillarity

Abstract: In this fluid dynamics video, we show thermocapillary actuation of a binary drop of water and heptanol where the binary drop in motion takes on a UFO-like shape. On a parylene-coated silicon surface subjected to a linear temperature gradient, a pure heptanol droplet quickly moves to the cold side by the Marangoni stress, while a pure water droplet remains stuck due to a large contact angle hysteresis. When the water droplet was encapsulated by a thin layer of heptanol and thermally actuated, the binary droplet takes on a peculiar shape resembling an UFO, i.e. an "unidentified" floating object as the mechanism is not yet completely understood. Our finding suggests that pure liquid droplets (e.g. aqueous solutions) that are not conducive to thermocapillary actuation can be made so by encapsulating them with another judiciously chosen liquid (e.g. heptanol).
One-Step Nonaqueous Synthesis of Pure Phase TiO2 Nanocrystals from TiCl4 in Butanol and Their Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract: Pure phase TiO2 nanomaterials were synthesized by an autoclaving treatment of TiCl4 with butanol as a single alcohol source. It was found that the control of molar ratio of TiCl4 to butanol played an important role in determining the TiO2 crystal phase and morphology. A high molar ratio of TiCl4 to butanol favored the formation of anatase nanoparticles, whereas rutile nanorods were selectively obtained at a low molar ratio of TiCl4 to butanol. Evaluation of the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized TiO2 was performed in terms of decomposition of organic dye rhodamine B under ultraviolet irradiation. It turned out that the as-synthesized TiO2 crystallites possessed higher photocatalytic activities toward bleaching rhodamine B than Degussa P25, benefiting from theirhigh surface area, small crystal size as well as high crystallinity.
Ar-Ar and U-Pb geochronology of Late Paleozoic basalts in western Guangxi and its constraints on the eruption age of Emeishan basalt magmatism

Abstract: The Late Paleozoic layered or stratoid-layered basalts in western Guangxi have similar elemental and isotopic compositions to Emeishan high-Ti basalts. Whole-rock 40Ar/39Ar and SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating were carried out for the representative basalt samples in three typical profiles in the area. Three basalts from the upper segment of Yangxu profile and lower segment of Yufeng and Min’an profiles yield the 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 253.6/+-0.4 Ma (20BS-71), 255.4±0.4 Ma (20BS-99) and 256.2±0.8 Ma (20BS-119), respectively. Twenty-three analyses on 23 zircons of the basalt from the upper segment of Yangxu profile give a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 253.7 ±6.1 Ma with an MSWD = 2.8. These new and published geochronological data for Emeishan large igneous province (LIP) indicate that the Emeishan LIP was initiated at ~260 Ma, voluminously erupted between 253 and 256 Ma, and possibly ended at ~251–253 Ma: The age (251–260 Ma) is generally consistent with that of the associated environmental deterioration and mass extinction events at the end-Guadalupian and Permo-Triassic boundary. These precise geochronological data provide important constraints on the dominantly eruptive time of the Emeisban LIP and understanding of the distribution of Emeishan high-Ti basalts and its mantle plume dynamics.
SHRIMP zircon U-Pb geochronology of Indosinian granites in Hunan Province and its petrogenetic implications

Abstract: The SHRIMP zircon U-Pb geochronology of three typically Indosinian granitic plutons with peraluminous and potassium-rich affinities (Tangshi ultraunit for Weishan and Baimashan, and Longtan ultraunit for Guandimiao) is presented in Hunan Province, South China. The analyses of zircons from biotite monozonite granites for Weishan, Baimashan and Guandimiao plutons show the single and tight clusters on the concordia, and yield the weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 244 ± 4, 243 ± 3 and 239 ± 3 Ma, respectively, representing the crystallized ages of these Indosinian granites. These data suggest that the Indosinian granitic plutons as previously thought formed at a narrow age span. In combination with other data, it is inferred that the Indosinian granites within the South China Block probably distributed in Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi and Guangdong provinces as planar shape, and were the derivation of the crustal materials in the intracontinental thickening setting. These precisely geochronological data provide important constraints for better understanding the spatiotemporal pattern of the Indosinian peraluminous granites and early Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the South China Block.
Baculovirus-mediated expression of a Chinese scorpion neurotoxin improves insecticidal efficacy

Abstract: An Buthus martensii Karsch Insect Toxin (BmK IT) gene was inserted into the genome of Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) to construct a recombinant baculovirus, AcMNPV-BmK IT. The expression of BmK IT was confirmed using RT-PCR, dot blot and SDS-PAGE analysis. Dose-lethal time responses to Spodoptera exigua larvae were compared between wild-type baculovirus AcMNPV and recombinant virus AcMNPV-BmK IT. At the concentration of 1 × 107 PlBs/mL, the median lethal time of recombinant baculovirus (LT50 = 73.6 h) on third instar S. exigua larvae showed an improvement of 13.2% over the efficacy of wild type virus (LT50 = 84.8 h) during a 192 h infection.
